Oh dear ... not another unnecessary clutch change victim. Clutches very rarely fail at 60K miles unless you slip it constantly. Sounds like a hydraulics problem probably brought on by stiff release mechanism that could have been cured by a little bit of grease. Oh well.

Yes.

The clutch hydraulics were also part of the problem, once bled, the bite returned from the floor right to the top, but slipped with the barest pressure, so as the mechanism was still very stiff and needed lubing I decided I might as well get it changed after investing in the labour to split the box, clean and lube it. Plate was only part worn as I suspected and the splines were pretty gummed up - so yes probably unnecessary but if I'm paying for the labour then I might as well have new parts to last me 80K rather than having to go in there again in 30K. They did try the old Dual Mass Flywheel is worn and needs changing line but I wasn't falling that one as there was none of the usual clues that had gone.

the car now has all the snags fixed, drives very nicely and it has only cost a couple of hundred more than anticipated, but trading 2 cars for this one will save me a grand over a year so it works for me.

That's exactly what mine used to do. Slipped briefly in higher gears when you hit 2200 rpm or so and slipped badly if you so much as breathed on the clutch pedal. After I lubricated the release arm bushes with the gearbox in situ these problems disappeared. The garage didn't need to remove the box just to lubricate the release mechanism, it isn't necessary. This is what Alfa stealers tend to do by all accounts, just a money raising exercise helped along by their spiel that you might as well change the clutch and DMF while you're at it.

Enjoyed a good run in it today, lovely gear change and also having had a 4 wheel alignment and the worn front tyres replaced (probably a legacy of the previous rack problem) it handles nicely through the bends and tracks straight on the motorway - beginning to really enjoy owning it now and pleased with the decision to chop in the Fabia VRS and GTV for it
