modern classic insurance
hi, my name's callum, i'm 24 and looking to buy myself an alfa 164 v6 as come curious bug has bitten me.
before buying, one thing i need to sort out is insurance costs.
i currently drive a 1987 land rover 110 which is insured as a classic with footman james. it costs me only £120 a year to insure and my insurers dont seem to mind about any modifications i make.
i thought i'd try them again and add a 164 to my insurance, this time with mileage limited to 6000 (land rover is unlimited) ...£1800!
so i tried just a normal policy through confused and it came out as £422 with elephant. i phoned them up to confirm my details and it went up after i made sure they knew i had 5 points on my license and an accident in 2004. as a result their quote went to £622, which is still 1/3 of the footman james quote.
ON the recommendation of this site i tried adrian flux and they came back with £780 with their classic policy, again 6000 miles.
£622 from elephant is not that bad, but i cant quite understand why the ordinary insurers are beating more specialist ones, especially seeing as the current classic policy i hold is so cheap.
i know my age, record and the car count against me, but i always thought i'd be better off with it insured as a classic. it is, after all a fair bit rarer these days than an old land rover.
anyone got any recommendations for any alfa freindly insurers? high-ish premiums are kind of putting me off buying the 164 as i only do a few thousand miles a year with 1 car, so with 2 i would be paying a lot for it sitting in the drive most of the time.
