Madness AF not competitive

Well after reading all the positive comments on here regarding AF insurance I gave them a ring today looking for a quote on my new Spider.

Well I have to praise them in some respect, because they told me outright they couldn't get anywhere near my other best quote (907 from Tesco) and then transferred me to alternative quote provider who were as useful as a chocolate teapot

Seems pretty strange, as I thought I would be bang in the middle of their target audience (owners club member, 2yrs NCB, 0 claims, 0 convictions). I know there is a chap on here from AF so if you read this and think you could help please reply!

Hello

Sorry to hear we were not competitive for you, unfortunately there is not much I can do for you personally as our underwriting team have already stated that they could not compete. Sorry we could not help, please keep trying us each year though as our schemes do change monthly to compete with other markets.

Hi Dan,

OK thanks for taking the time to reply - c'est la vie.

I tend to give insurance companies once chance only, as after all the market is so competitive, so I dont think ill be trying AF again.

Just strikes me as odd that a company that markets itself as a specialist insurer with deals with owners clubs etc cant match a quote from a generic insurer - I mean its Tesco for gawds sake

I guess AF aren't that desperate for business, but for 850notes the business would be yours!

Online quote comes back at over 1700 -- it seems specialist insurers only specialise in giving you joke prices!

Re: AF not competitive

It's been stated before (admittedly by me) AF seem to be very competitive with special circumstance insurance, modified motors, etc. Not so good on the standard stuff though.

Re: AF not competitive

My Spider is now insured by AF.... they were the best by MILES on price to be fair....although it's on a 'cherished' policy and the miles were limited to ~5k per year. Had Green Flag recovery service in the 'package' too. So I'm very happy
Sorry it didnt work out for you mate....

Hmmm Re: AF not competitive

I have to say that they weren't that compeditive for me either, But, that said, my renewal price with Morthan is more than 50 more expensive than applying on line as a new customer again. What ever happened to loyalty, or does it just work one way?

Re: AF not competitive

I found Esure the best for my 159 and they were prepared to give me no-claims bonus discount - I've just come out of a company car scheme (but they wouldn't protect the no claims until I have been with them for 2 years).

With my wifes car we have to swop insurers every year to get the best price.

There is no such thing as loyalty from the 'high-street' insurers. The premiums are all derived from a computer, and to a computer your loyalty doesn't reduce the risk of you having a claim so it doen't take it into account!

I was also surprised that several insurers said tha a tracker made no difference to the premium!

Re: AF not competitive

I found that until I was over 25 a lot of companies just wouldn't even quote on a car with > 2.0 engine or insurance group 15, as my 75 was.

Privilege may be worth a shot too, or elephant. They are companies me and my mates have used on silly cars.

Re: AF not competitive

Agree with what has been said about AF been better for more specialist insurance. They have never been able to touch any quotes on my last three cars so I have gone with others, but on my Group N 405 I built about ten Years ago they were amazing and gave me a like for like policy fully outlining how I would get everything back that had been put into the car! The car itself was only an F reg Sri to start with and worth about 1500 but they insured it for 10,000 with full agreement on everything done to it

Hope you guys are comparing like for like. I'm with Eleephant and the premium they quote is for 10 months which makes them look a lot better than they really are.

Re: AF not competitive

Well, I just thought I would follow up my original post - have found a really excellent and genuinely helpful broker call Chrisknott - www.chrisknot.co.uk

They advertise through AROC and do specialist quotes for owners clubs. They will beat any genuine quote by 10% which means I should get a price of around 850 pounds

And they actually took into consideration things like I have already got a Spider, got a full D1 bus license etc in order to bring down the quote - please take note Adrian Flux!

NB - best 'mainstream' insurers were Privilege at just under a 1000 and BellDirect at about 950.

Re: AF not competitive

Renewed a few weeks ago. It was a very close run race between Adrian Flux and Chris Knott, which was won by the latter because their payment plan was cheaper and more convenient:

Adrian Flux: 350 [56.25 deposit + 9 x 40.02 = 416 total]

Chris Knott: 330 [104 deposit + 10 x 24.74 = 352.38 total]

Both quotes were almost 100 cheaper than the next cheapest quote (including renewal from eSure).

(They were quoting on the following: 156 JTS (2005-reg, kept on the driveway), 7yrs protected NCB, 250 total excess)

Re: AF not competitive

One point worth making is I have a good relationship with a small high st broker if it came down to it I would pay another £50 on top for the knowledge that if I have a problem I can walk through there front door and discuss it with a living person rather than on the phone to someone in New Delhi that takes 45 minutes to get through to. You pay your money and take your choice.

I'm with Privilege, and their system didn't have the GTA sportwagon on either, only the saloon.
The guy just asked me "Are you sure that's what it is?", I took a moment to chek that yes, I do have an estate back end on it, and he added it to their system there and then.

I suppose adding a different engine is a different matter though, he just gave it exactly the same loading as a saloon (which I suppose is interesting in itself, estates have a reputation of being more vulnerable to thiefs, but obviously the insurance companies don't think so)

Re: AF not competitive

I eventually beat ChrissKnott down to 800 quid with a 350excess which I think is quite reasonable. BellDirect ended up being the best mainstream insurer @ 890.

It took a while to go through as even they didnt have the Diesel in the system - all is well now though.

( I found it interesting that the diesel is cheaper to insure than the JTS, even though it is up on horsepower and torque and is significantly more exepensive - diesel drivers must crash less!)
