Chris Harris Comparison : 4C vs Cayman S

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGwawx4zaMg

He is all praise about the Cayman S

Wish he would mention the Nurburgring time though. 4C should be quicker than the Cayman S

Most pathetic and inconclusive comparison I have ever seen. For me, I never saw the "point" of the video! Why waste your time doing a "comparison" if you not gonna stick them against a stopwatch.

Worst video/review Harris has ever made IMO.

Yeah only consolation I can say is that the Caymen S is so perfect that its meant to be better than the 911 which is not set up as the "perfect" car. Follows then that everyone would rather have a 911 than be seen dead in a Cayman.

Hope the same is true, who wants a perfect Cayman when you can have a 911 or a 4C

No surprise, Chris praises the Porsche and critizes the 4C. He is clever! Because when he first drove the Alfa last year, he said the 4C was great. Alfa guys were happy and all those who thought Harris is on a Porsche ticket got off his case.

Now he says the Cayman is the better car. So Porsche is happy again with Chris. And according to Harris his new verdict is not a contradiction, because it's all down to british roads....
Sorry, last time I was in Britain, the roads were black and made of tarmac, like everywhere else.

Anyway, both are great cars and I hope no one is buying or not buying one car or the other just because a internet journo says this or that.

On a different note, this opposite lock cornering is just ridiculous. Sure he has fantastic car control, but still, is this a drifting competition?

Err ... I don't know, really. He says "It's a great looking thing which is a blast to drive. And best of all, it isn't another Porsche".

What more do you need? He likes the 4C a lot while acknowledging the Porsche is for all practical purposes better. Alfas have never been about the spreadsheet-wielding anorak's definition of "best". Not since the 30's anyway.

Oh, well. I assume you have to be into Alfas to get it, which evidently many of the participants in this thread isn't. You don't get to call yourself an Alfista merely by owning an Alfa.

I like Chris's car reviews, generally not to serious but quite informative. I do agree about his comments on our roads though, Here in Yorkshire they are terrible but when I've driven in France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland etc there roads are just far better and my car performed a lot a better than it does here at home, ( I think I'm right in saying we one of only a couple of country's that run its utility services under our roads, hence why there always being dug up creating the rubbish services we have to deal with ) but I just get used to it I guess. He does end the video saying the Alfa could do without the sports set up and smaller wheels which he's looking to driving and should perform better over here.

So there you have it : the school of Clarkson type journo's have spoken. You can pick between "fantastic" from the TG boys, "greatbadgreatmmmph" from Harris, and "nothing good about it" from EVO. In the end they express their opinion and it means **** all. We're better off picking cars by if we like the way it looks than to go by that lot.

Give me the European press with their comparison by numbers, added with a lap time on a real circuit any day.

It really isn't an objective choice, and I think Harris accepts that. How many people would say that the Maserati Quattroporte is a "better" car than the Mercedes S class? I would struggle to argue that the Maser is better, but I know which of the two I would go for

Exactly. He certainly hedged his bets , having learned from the Ferrari experience . But you are likely to be an Alfa person or a Porsche person and there's a lot of goodwill for Alfa.

I'd love a 4c as a toy but it's not a viable car for us. Not a tourer or daily driver.

The Cayman S fits all the bills in that respect.

Nurburgring Lap Times are all I need :

8.04 Alfa Romeo 4C (Standard)
8.04 Porsche Cayman S (Sport Auto, 19 inch wheels, ceramic brakes)

List of Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So in reality the Alfa is quicker if the Porsche didn't have the ceramic brakes.

If you want something more user friendly, versatile, comfortable yet sporty get a Porsche CAYENNE !

Leave the exotic sports cars to Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.

Honestly don't think you can knock that review from 'the Harris'.

It's pretty clear to me that the Cayman is an amazing piece of kit. Refined by a profitable company over a number of iterations with a legacy of other successful models to learn from (and borrow from the parts bin/engineering dept as required). Boringly overly popular maybe and perhaps under-appreciated. But for good reason.

The 4C is never going to match up to that, particularly in its first iteration. I think Alfa know that and wanted to find something that was not so refined, after all that is what Alfa is all about really.

Despite not driving the car (except for in my dreams!) I believe they have achieved that. It's just a shame it's not about 10K cheaper. I think making it much more accessible would have been Alfa's icing on the cake. But right now, I am pretty sure the 3,500 will go and who knows what happens next?

He mentions that the gearbox is "not the quickest". I could have sworn that I have read that the TCT in the 4C is actually the quickest in the world. Is that false or does it only apply to upshifts?

Garage
The gearbox was not the quickest due to him driving the car in natural. Changes are more rapid in dynamic and race..

And the changes are at its quickest at full chat. When commenting on the changes he was hardly belting it. But he still said its pretty instant.

I plan on driving my 4C as a daily.
In that respect the 4C fits the bill.

When the 4C is older and people can afford them as a second hand car people will be driving them everyday anyway as their only car.

I've Read this to but I find it very hard to believe that, a front wheel drive car, with 400+ extra kg's and only 40 extra bhp to move that around, with a 0-62 time that’s almost 1,5 sec slower can beat the 4C (and the Cayman S with ceramic brakes) by 9 sec.
Same conditions and same driver will absolutely give another result.
