there "is no substance to these rumours"

Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives.

Volkswagen have enough trouble ahead of them as it is.

Some moron on a blog rolls out his pet theory, and suddenly it's being repeated as news. People have got to stop believing **** just because it's written down on a screen.

VW's recent acquisitions of MAN and Ducati have drained their coffers, to the point where I don't believe they could acquire another brand with cash (even if Suzuki buys itself out of VW's clutches)... And it's not like FIAT needs the cash: they actually had more liquidity than VW at end of 2012 (and that excludes Chrysler). They can buy the next stake in Chrysler as it is; the problem is the price being asked by the current owners - FIAT having more money won't make overpaying for that Chrysler stake a better deal.

Surely as VW are owned by Porsche , it is their liquidity we should be looking at ?

No, Porsche is owned by VW. The final purchase was completed in July last year, with VW buying the 49% of Porsche shares (that they didn't already own) for €4.4 bn. (story)

Some of the confusion may be that Ferdinand PiŽch, the eminence grise of Volkswagen AG, is a grandson of Ferdinand Porsche.

VW own Porsche, but the confusion comes from Porsche, hot on the heels of the Cayenne's success, tried to buy VW a few years back.

During the process, they ran into significant financial woes, falling well short of being able to purchase them.

In retaliation, VW purchased Porsche, which was by now cheaper and in significant financial difficulty.

This whole story is purely semantic in that VW and Porsche are "family" and Porsche got caught trying to buy VW in order to add to the protection of VW by their illegal level of shares held by Lower Saxony. They then could have paid back the money they borrowed by cashing in the Wolfsburg companies money.
