Can anyone recommend a competent mechanic (or garage) in the Norwich area for a cambelt change, preferably not VAT registered! FIAT diesel also needs a belt change.
If anyone does feel like doing their own change I have camshaft clamps for the 156 and others which they can borrow.
Sorry no-one's come back to you - I only noticed it today.
I have used the Alfashop for cambelt(s) with no problems on the last two 156s, though they will be VAT registered and about the same cost as any other independent. Factor in tensioner, variator and maybe water pump too.
The problems I've had with people who aren't used to servicing these cars is that the belt usually gets overtightened which leads to noise and risks destroying the tensioner or waterpump
Thats right, I once had a 944 turbo and the belt needed changing along with the water pump. He had over tighten the belt so much that it destroyed the pump causing the car to have a cylinder head gasket faliure spilling the contents of oil and water across the road and a costly rebuild afterwards at the independent specialist at Norwich.
I would only use the alfashop in Norwich, my father, myself and 2 brothers have taken our alfas there for years. At least you know it will be done right with no issues.
Have you heard of Richard Drake his workshop is behind the Alfa shop in Norwich. He changed my cambelt Variator and a couple of other things very good slightly cheaper than the Alfa shop.
Hopes this helps people
