Complicated, and not completely at all logical reasoning.

My earliest memory of any veggie tendency is at primary school infants (about 6 years old)
watching the big old B&W tv with a room full of my contemporaries. Programmes for schools, footage of lots of very cute yellow chicks running around, prompting universal oohs and ahhs and expressions of love from my class mates. My favourite dinner was roast chicken, and at this moment the connection I made was quite disturbing.

Occasional slight guilt at eating meat recurred over the next 15 years or so, then in the early to mid 80s there was a lot of bad publicity around industrial farming practices (e.g. hormones and antibiotics being fed to livestock). I decided to try a vegetarian diet, and I'm still trying.

I don't preach to others, and reserve the right to change my mind.
But from personal experience I think animals are intelligent, sentient beings, and farming them for food in the way we do seems barbaric - especially as it's not only completely unnecessary but positively inefficient and harmful to the planet.
