I know this isn't truely a forum for discussing such things other than local meets, but I thought it might be a good idea to have a list of local specialists and people's experiences of them.
Reply on this thread with details (names, addresses, genuine experiences, etc) and I'll periodically update this first post to keep all the info together.
I'm booked in for a diagnostic and general health check (pre-MOT) on the 1st October - £40 for that. They also took a list off me of work which I need doing.
Had some work done on a non alfa - did a good job ,they know there stuff and tell you whats wrong and whats required without the bull . Fiat/alfa trained mechanics . A pleasure to do business with

Ital Auto's ....Chesterfield (brimington)
I know it's in Derbyshire but for us south of the county they are great... They are gonna do a reset once my new MAF is fitted for nowt! (am supplying and fitting the maf lol) (hopefully cure my problem) http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=italautos
Maybe the AO should be tryin to get these indies affiliated with us somehow. The AO could start a new forum dedicated to local independant specialist with contact details etc.... In turn arrange for some sort of discounts
im intending on giving JJB motors a bell next week to do a couple of things-any personal recommendations with details?
do they fit parts you supply?, or will they supply and fit only? ive got rear trailing arms, and both sets of transverse arms to go on, plus a manifold flexi to weld in
And for me! Those guys are lifesavers
I've had MOT's, tyres, sevices oh, and the odd gearbox re-build done by them.
Alfatech Huddersfield (01484)428485
Had a diagnostic healthcheck, which highlighted a few potential issues in time for the MOT, most were sorted and they even rubbed and waxoiled the brake pipes for me before the test. Missed one though and it failed on it, or it was too far gone! They had already sorted the handbrake cables in the morning, which it would have DEFINITELY have failed on.
One brake pipe and one retest later, the 166 passed the MOT today.
They had also serviced and MOTd the VR6, which I still have, the week before.
Totally honest fellas, love their Alfas and they stayed late, which made it easy for me to pick my car up after work.
I've still had to spend £610 on the two cars in the past week, though.
Anyone want to buy a MK3 Gof VR6? Has 12 months MOT.
slight bump for this thread, i can has recommendation for JJB Motors in York.
not "cheap" but not overly expensive either, considering the marque.
i had 5th gear re-seal, CV gaiter, handbrake cables, and a trailing arm done. i also had my exhaust re-worked. this was removed and refitted X number of times. the car was there for 2 days total, i had been told that about 12hrs were used just on the exhaust, but i was charged 4hrs.
the exhaust system was completely removed, and where a flange wasnt straight, machining was performed in order to get it perfectly flat. a flexi was fitted at my request, and it now has a curious sound...bump of the "sound of the twinspark" thread coming up.
great attention to detail and general service. exhaust hangers were replaced, handbrake cable guides/hangers were replaced where rusted badly, gearbox and engine bay steam cleaned, and car exterior washed as matter of course(2nd time i have been there, car washed both times).
a CD of images is being prepared so i can have a record of what has been done, before/after pics etc for my records/selling info etc.
i even had my engine oil topped up when a low level was noticed at random check.
going to re-book for strip and full rust check and underseal.
Just had the 147 in for belt exchange , variator and service , car runs a lot better now .
The attention to detail as regards the customer care and technical knowlege is excellent , as for the bill at the end of the job i thought was very satisfactory. Your trusting someone who has good experience of these cars , is careful and considerate and advises where necessary faults and future problems , after all it is a specialist vehicle that needs that bit extra and gets value for money with JJB's servicing . I wouldn't trust a back street garage to undertake the repairs he carries out and it proberbly wouldn't come back clean and tidy or even run for that matter.
Just had a 72k done at Bearings in Bradford for the 147 JTD and what a nice experience it was. Despite parting with £520 for it (needed 2 new tyres, front discs and pads in addition to the standard service), the labour was £138 which at £45 per hour for specialists seemed reasonable all round.
It's obvious that these fellas give a monkeys about Alfas and that they have vast experience at stripping down and rebuilding them, so you can be sure that your motor is in safe hands.
Bearings don't charge by the hour, they charge by the manufacturers quoted repair times so even if a job takes 12 hours, if it said 3 in the book then that is what you pay. I'm sure sometimes you win and sometimes you lose on this, but at least you know up front.
I haven’t used a main dealer since my car was 18 months old – I was so unhappy with the way I was treated by the former Hull dealer, I was prepared to forgo the final year’s warranty! (Hiking over to York was too much hassle at the time, and it turned out nothing that required warranty work happened in that time).
However my 1.8 156 is four years old now, and yesterday I dropped it at Woodcock Car Sales & Service on Anlaby Road in Hull, as I been having problems starting from warm last weekend (diagnosed crankshaft sensor before even being hooked up to the diagnostic machine).
I’m also having nsf headlamp replacing following botched crash repairs by the aforementioned main dealer the last time the car was with them (just one of the issues I had with them, and only recently come to light).
The original quote from Alan at Woodcock's for all the work was £375, however this has now gone up to £435 as it appears that the sensor is not the 30 quid one he was expecting to find under the bonnet.
Alan seems to be really friendly and helpful. He’s called me every step of the way so as not to get any nasty surprises, just need to see the final result when I collect tomorrow, and hand over my cash.
I got the car back from Woodcocks. The final bill was a couple of quid short of £390. Discounts had been applied to the parts (in the end the sensor was about £30).
Out of the bill, labour came to £80, diagnostic £42, and (the killer) just short of £200 for a new headlamp.
I wqas kept well informed, and they seem to do a great job. I'll be happy to take my car back there in the future
I've had codes read by them and managed to get parts from them but never had any work done by them. ..mainly cos they saw the gearbox warning light on and refused to touch my selespeed. I can't really blame them for that but they are supposed to be a specialist.
Another user on here (Cragmaz69) has had serious problems with them though in the past. A forum search for "turin motors" should un-earth his thoughts.
 Still have family in Leeds, and seem to remember the name from when I was young and our family car was a Fiat 130. Come up a few times a year in one of the Alfa's - just curious.
Looking forward to a trip home for National Alfa Day!
Just had this done. All done, and let me know about any future stuff that's going to be done at my next service
