Re: All Day in the Hospital
Good Lord...
Just read this, so sorry to hear about it! Glad the surgery went well, a friend of mine, our fiddle player, lost the tip of his index finger (self-inflicted) back in May, and had a superb recovery, now back to playing as if nothing had happened.
My very best wishes to your son, and for a speedy recovery.
Ron

Re: All Day in the Hospital
I was sorry to read this. I hope he gets over this soon. This is my field to some extent (med neg is my field). My advice is that you find a good personal injury solicitor - alternatively check to see if you have legal expenses cover with your household insurers or motor insurers (or your son's). Is the thumb on his dominant hand? The driver is vicariously liable via his employer imho. Get professional independent legal advice - ignore armchair lawyers giving their pennys worth!

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Vacarious Liability is a tricky field
But he will be seeking compensation and due to my line of work I know several good personal injury lawyers.
For now we're glad he still has a moveable joint on his thumb
and will just support him through his rehabilitation

He attended the site to repair an excavator, He looked in the engine bay and asked the driver to try and turn over the engine, the driver did this and John spotted the defect and told the chap to switch off the engine this he did only to try and resart it just as John was reaching into the engine
The result was Jonh had the top of his thumb amputated
He'll have surgery tommorrow to remove the thumb down to the first joint.
My opinion of the health and Safety manager for such a multi national company is very low just now as nobody attended the Hospital to establish what went wrong and Doubt very much if a full investigation has been carried out even though an employee has lost a finger
I was an engineer for years and never suffered and serious injury but he's only 27 with his career ahead of him I'm a Manager now and if I could I'd give him my right thumb I would I don't need it
If only he'd said Just "get out the cab mate"
Sorry this is the longest thread I've ever posted but it's been a Sh!t day
Blimey - sorry I missed this one. I'm very sorry to hear what happened HM and I wish your son a speedy recovery

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Sorry to hear the bad news Happy man, large companies can be so cold. My first daughter had a serious heart defect, died in hospital, revived, sent to Southampton general next day for open heart surgery at 15 days old, two days after operation my boss phoned(working as a financial advisor at the time for a large insurance Co) and asked when I was coming back to work. Beggers belief. Good luck to your son.

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Mrs H my wife Jan would like to say a few words she's been so touched by AO's response
"hey, I just wanted to say thanks for all the support, its lovely to know so many of you are thinking about us, I know its only his thumb, but the shock of the accident was awful, it does make you think how precarious it all is. Thanks again Jan xx"

Better news HM - but he'll be in a lot of pain for some time to come (my business partner lost one of his fingers a few years ago and he suffered for a while). I'm sure the family will give him all the support he needs though - you obviously care about him a lot.

I also missed this Tony. It's a terrible thing to happen, but so much more when it's your kid. Glad to see he's getting through it. Keep your chins up.

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Sorry to hear this mate, hope your son gets better real soon.
My dad, who is health and safety manager for an engineering company, only last week had a guy at work get his hand mangled by a machine. I believe he had to have it amputated.
But it could have been much worse for your son, but it still sucks
Glad he had a joint put back on top though, this should mean within a few months it's completely back to normal.

Re: All Day in the Hospital
I'm so glad he's got the use of his thumb again, what a great surgeon . You must be so relieved that it turned out so well.
Quite the rollercoaster ride though.
Hope the healing is quick. Best wishes to your son.

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Jesus mate, only just seen this, sounds like a promising outcome from the surgery, fingers crossed for John, hope he makes a speedy & pain free recovery.
One of my biking mates lost his right leg below the knee, and although it took a very long time to recover, if you saw what he does on a bike now, if you didn't know, you'd never guess he was missing a leg.... I guess what I'm trying to say is that the body is an amazing thing, given time it'll adapt and most things will become as easy to do as they always were.
As for the firm he works for, and the numpty in the digger, take 'em to the cleaners, no mercy! I have very little time for people who go round claiming for every paltry little trip or slip, but something like this deserves to be chased up properly - go get 'em
