All the best HM. I hope your son is ok. Hopefully it won't have an impact on his career. A terrible thing to happen. But, in the big picture at least that was all that happened.

Re: All Day in the Hospital
A horrible accident HM, hope your boy isn't in pain and can come to terms with it.
It just goes to show, it doesn't matter how aware you may be of H&S issues, a moment's loss of concentration, a misheard shout, or a misunderstanding between workmates can easily lead to an unfavourable or even tragic outcome .Then the damage is done, and it's too late .
Without knowing the exact details, I'm sure it's the case that half a thumb is a lot better than no thumb, the old opposing digits thing. I wish your lad and your family the best for this Christmas, a good time for all to pull together.

Re: All Day in the Hospital
So very sorry to hear about your sons accident. If its any consolation I used to sail with a development engineer from the old British Leyland who had exactly the same injury. There is the period of painful adjustment, but Russ was able to do just about everything he could do before his accident, so try to be as positive as you can in the circumstances.
With such rotten luck we can only hope that the op goes smoothly, and we all know you will be giving him the support that is so important in these cases, to buoy him up a bit when he feels down.
We send our very best wishes

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Dear HM,Tony, very sad, bad ,news to have to post mate : Best wishes for a reasonably quick, comfortable, recovery to your son,and just hope he is able to re-adjust his life without too much trauma. :
Of little consolation I know, but perhaps you may remember my account, way back now, of one of two brothers in our unit, concerning the commander's cupola lid not fastened securely, moving at high speed, cross country, with him looking rearwards? Both hands on the 1/2" steel periscope frames, and the sad outcome? He was compensated, financially, but of course there is no compensation for that sort of happening really. Cheers, mate. :

Very true, I have a mate who lost his thumb at work, its only a stump as he lost it below the top knuckle, he retrained and became a plumber - a very good one at that. His career shouldn't suffer because of this accident. Hope he recovers well and on good form for a nice Christmas

Re: All Day in the Hospital
Happy, I'm very sorry to hear of what has happened to your boy. I hope the surgery goes very well when he eventually gets in there. My thoughts are with him, and yourself and wife.
Try not to let it detract from your christmas holidays, the time is for family and this year family will be the strongest part of it for you guys.
I wish him a speedy recovery, and all the best with his future.
(I have a friend who works as a mechanic, he lost his thumb right down to the second knuckle - he still does his job, and has found an amazing skill to use his index finger as a thumb. Losing a limb or a finger... as long as you are strong of mind, you will be strong in practice).
All the best,
Si
