Gorgeous, heart-breaking, loveable bands, songs and lyrics.......

Not definitive......I have loads of entries, based on content, context, style and, oh, loads of indefinable other stuff.......

here's a starter....if you get it you are sweeping and swooning in seconds....it's irresistable and lovely

Juxtaposed with you - Super Furry Animals

It's easy when you know how
To get along without Biff! Bang! Pow!
And if I see that you're fed up,
I'll stop and give you a leg up.
Over priced unreal estate,
Surreal estate,
The highest price they've hit to date,
Creating new divides and tension.

You've got to tolerate,
All those people that you hate,
I'm not in love with you,
But I wont hold that against you,
You've got to tolerate,
Some of those people that you hate,
I'm not in love with you,
But I wont hold that against you.

This is a tale of 2 city/situations,
Mutual appreciation,
Away from narrow pre-conception,
Avoiding conflict hyper-tension,
Non-phobic word aerobic.
This was my domain,
Till someone stole my name.

You've got to tolerate,
All those people that you hate,
I'm not in love with you,
But I wont hold that against you,
You've got to tolerate,
Some of those people that you hate,
I'm not in love with you,
But I wont hold that against you.

Let's get juxtaposed, juxtaposed,
Just suppose I juxtapose with you.......
Let's get juxtaposed, juxtaposed,
Just suppose I juxtapose with you.......
Let's get juxtaposed, juxtaposed,
Just suppose I juxtapose with you.......
Let's get juxtaposed, juxtaposed,
Just suppose I juxtapose with you.......

You've got to tolerate,
All those people that you hate,
I'm not in love with you,
But I wont hold that against you,
You've got to tolerate,
Some of those people that you hate,
I'm not in love with you,
But I wont hold that against you.

I think I've done this before but I'm feeling blissful. Sorry

Re: Gorgeous, heart-breaking, loveable bands, songs and lyrics.......

I would have to say this one:

Joy Division - Love will tear us apart

When routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And resentment rides high
But emotions won't grow
And were changing our ways
Taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side
Is my timing thats flawed?
Our respect runs so dry
Yet there's still appeal
That we've kept through our lives
But love, love will tear us apart again

You cry out in your sleep
All my failings exposed
There's a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold
Just that something so good
Just can't function no more
When love, love will tear us apart again

It was one of the last songs Ian Curtis ever wrote. It's a song that came from the heart

Mark, what happened to Ian? When you say it was the last song he wrote, was that through choice...or circumstance?

Ian sadly committed suicide at the age of 23 in May 1980
He suffered from epilepsy and personal problems which may of contributed to him taking his own life but his legacy still lives on

From what I understand, the song Love will tear us apart was wrote about his strained relationship with his wife due to an on going affair with a Belgium woman and his own visions on life.

oh. that's pretty bad.

i'm not trying to make a cheap joke here, but who was having the affair? him or his wife?

i was going to say this earlier, but in light of what you said - and the song lyrics posted - now might be a more appropriate time to share this. I once read this*: "I was complete before i met you. it wasn't until you tore me apart, i realised how complete i was before i met you".

i like that. it makes you think about reassessing what you think you want, relative to what you think you need.

*source now lost in the mists of time, i'm afraid.

Wish You Were Here - Floyd

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

perfect...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die."

Re: Gorgeous, heart-breaking, loveable bands, songs and lyrics.......

sheesh, I could write/add reams here. There are so many gorgeous songs that I like, but these spring to mind:

"Tell me now [what's] the difference....between a shark, and the ghost of a shark?" This is a lyric from a song by Tom McRae, stating - via a question - that the long term effects of a bad event, are as bad as the bad event itself.

I can't be bothered to find/type all the lyrics of Big Country's song Steeltown, but - by beat and by lyric - it captures the intensity of a 'steeltown's' raging furnace as the lifeblood of the working people that fed it. Tragically, it also captures the effects of when the furnace died; and so too, did the community - and thus the people - who fed it.

"Here I stand with my own kin...at the end of everything"

"I came here with all my friends. Leaving behind the weight of years. Leaving our own in floods of tears."

It's all about the men who optmistically left their shi5e lives for a better future in the 'steetown'...'All the landscape was the Mill, Grim as reaper with a heart of hell, with a river of bodies flowing with the bell; here was a future for hands of skill."

Despite all that optimism, it was only another dream that shattered when the steel industry/factory closed: "We built all this with our own hands. But who could know we built on sand? Now it's barren all too soon; there is no miracle in ruins."

The plight of the working man; all his hopes and aspirations shattered when the 'dream future' turns out to be just as fragile as failures of the past. Jeeps, it's an awesome tune full of hope, but ultimately shattered aspirations.

I've got loads and loads of stuff I could share. Words here diminish the impact of the songs or, alas, their gentle nuances.

Re: Gorgeous, heart-breaking, loveable bands, songs and lyrics.......

I can see it in your eyes
what I know in my heart is true
that our love it has faded
like the summer run through
and we'll walk down the shoreline
one last time together
feel the wind blow our wanderin' hearts
like a feather
but who knows what's waiting
in the wings of time
dry your eyes
we're gonna go where we can shine

Don't be hiding in sorrow
or clinging to the past
with your beauty so precious
and the season so fast
and hey, no matter how cold the horizon appears
or how far the first night
when I held you near
we're gonna rise from these ashes
like a bird aflame
take my hand
we're gonna go where we can shine
(na na na na na na na na, shine)

And for all that we struggle
for all we pretend
you know, you know, you know it don't come down to nothing
except love in the end
and ours is a road
that is strewn with goodbyes
but as it unfolds
as it all unwinds
remember your soul is the one thing
you can't compromise
step out of the shadow
we're gonna go where we can shine
we're gonna go where we can shine
we're gonna go where we can shine

(and look, and look)
Through the windows of midnight
moonfoam and silver

Not everyones cup o' tea but this is from his first album (excellent it is too) - David Gray, Shine. The song and the last verse in particular sums up the way I think about life in general (Happy sad)

Isn't science fun?!?! Eye think so!

Re: Gorgeous, heart-breaking, loveable bands, songs and lyrics.......

Too many to think of when you first started the thread - so I gave up before my head exploded

Just listened to this album and it has a standout track which fits the threads' requirements......

Mojave 3 - Caught beneath your heel

Open up your eyes
Stand against the wall
Tell me what you see
Tell me what you're looking for
I'm caught beneath the wheels
Caught beneath your heel
I'll be your lover or your friend babe
But I will not be your fool

Maybe it's your pride
The midnight in your eyes
That tricks you into thinkin'
That you got nowhere to hide
But this time you must know
Yeah this time you must know
I'll be your lover or your friend babe
But I will not be your fool

Just tell me what you see
Yeah tell me what you see
I'm caught beneath your heel babe
and it's you that must let GO

Just tell me what you see
Yeah tell me what you see

I'm with you on the thing dpat!

Tony (or Anthony as he was later known) Wilson signed Joy division to his record company, Factory Records.

I don't believe his suicide was anything to do with simply him having an affair and an impending divorce. I think his psychological problems ran extremely deep.

and so it died....i'm listening to some Frank Sinatra now

in the wee small hours

apparently when he recorded he insisted on early morning (3am) recordings because that was when his voice could do just to "it's quarter to three..."
