As quick as possible please...sorry but...
dunno who else to ask on such a grand scale
1) just bought the new CD by the Finn Brothers (irrelavant point BUT
I really want to hear these new songs on me PC speakers)
2) tried to play it on the comp and it won't even recognise
the CD as a drive (but REALONE still plays all me previous tracks
...of course though they're still on the hard drive)
3) think it may be a result of a major re-jig I did last month after AVG
crashed it
4) is there an easy way to get the CD driver back without having
to fook about too much...probably NOT...BUT...anyone
...it's just the inbuilt CD in the comp
...some system thing I could go into
2nd chances are rare

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
Are you saying that computer doesn't recognise the media in the CD drive? Don't know if this will work, but give it a shot:-
1) CD is in drive
2) Right click mouse on drive letter ie 'F:'
3) Do you get the 'open' option, what happens if you click that?
Sorry not much help really.

BTW - do normal software CD's work?
Keep answering the questions such that someone will know how to fix it.

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
first thing you have to do:
take a cd that used to work on your computer
try that
if it works, chances are you're dealing with anti-copy software on the Finn Brothers' cd

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
Well to summarise then, not CD specific whether software or music. This does point to your theory of a driver perhaps or it could indeed be a hardware fault. I'll compile something that might help. Back in a mo.

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
...does anyone know if they're some way of accessing the original
CD Driver from the CPU without having to resort to rehashing the
whole lot ...
...just a setting on the system to get it to re-recognise a CD that
it's always recognised but seems to have failed to get back since I
rescued the system
...I know this is boring...BUT...U lot have helped me many times before

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
Based on XP, try this:-
1) Goto to 'Control Panel' which will open a new window.
2) Double click 'System' icon which brings up another window.
3) Select the 'Hardware' tab and click on 'Device Manager'
4) In the new window you should see a list. Is the 'DVD/CD-ROM' in the list?
5) What happpens when you try to expand it by clicking on the '+'
6) What are the properties, via right mouse click on named device?
7) If you get to point 6, what does it say in 'Driver Details...' on the 'Driver' tab'?
... that's enough for now, as I need the above questions answered - not exact details really but more how far you get and if you see anything strange.

So it is not listed in the Device Manger window, like keyboard, display adapter etc?
You may need windows to recognise the device and auto install. Answer above while I have another think.

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
Okay try this:-
1) Goto back to 'control panel'.
2) Double click 'Add Hardware'.
3) Follow the wizard dialogues and report back whether it finds the hardware or not.

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
From the Device Manager window, right-click on the PC icon at the top of the right-hand window. It should give you the option to "Scan for hardware changes".
Select this option. Unless there is a problem with the CD-Rom drive itself, the PC should now detect it and automatically install the default drivers.

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
In that case you are going to have to open up the case and check the cables. If they are all tight, and the PC still doesn't detect it after a reboot and scan, then the CD-Rom drive is probably knackered.

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
do you know the make and type of the CD drive?
if so, so go on the net, and google using the "make type" + drivers.. download them and reboot.. that should do the trick

Re: As quick as possible please...sorry but...
Did you try GC's way?
Going back to the wizzard, did it display a DVD/CD-DRIVE in the list after you said yes to hardware already connected? Go through the list carefully as it might not be obvious.
EDIT:
Yes Wims idea is another thing to try as well opening up the box and checking the cables to the CD Drive which GC suggested. Actually disconnecting and rebooting....shutting down....and then reconnecting and booting up might work.
If all that fails then you need to find the CD that accompanies your CD drive or general PC disk and try that. If that fails then off to google as Wim said and see if you can find any setup software to recognise and install the device for you. You need to know the make and model of the drive in your PC box. Make a note if it, if you open it.
AND Switch off and disconnect from the mains please!!!
