For me, back to a favourite from 2005. The lovely Emily Haines with her band Metric and an award winning vid.

I can't help but notice the great disparity between your musical tastes...

Re: Today I am mostly listening to
LMAO you won't get more of a diverse musical taste than me, one day I started listening to Obituary the original death metal band, then onto Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth and then loads of House music and Xzibit
You need the rap music to show off my sub and the rock to show off my front speakers.

Re: Today I am mostly listening to
So it's a matter of necessity... And vanity!!
Don't get me wrong, I listen to a couple of different styles, but they are not THAT far apart.
I mainly listen to Progressive Rock/Metal, especially Prog Metal, but sometimes I listen to Tori Amos, Pet Shop Boys and Erasure.
And I love 80's music, I grew up listening to that stuff.
I consider myself a metalhead.
Welcome to my favorite thread on AO.

Re: Today I am mostly listening to
It's good and healthy to be eclectic!! Balanced diet and all that
Pretty similar I'd say (not musically necessarily) but both on the harder side of their respective genre spectrums wouldn't you say??
I can't stand either - so perhaps I'll just butt out

Wouldn't call it vanity, more friends of mine wouldn't be too happy if I was listening to Obituary or Morbid Angel in the car with them there. So the rap or dance goes down a treat and to be fair I enjoy listening to all that music. I know if I listen to Panteras albums I will drive like as if my hair is on fire and I am bursting for a ****.
But if I listen to New order or the police or Pink Floyd, I drive like a 90 year old person pootling along the road and soaking up the music.

The music I listen to, even though may appear to bear no resemblance to each other, has a common thread. None of it (besides 80's stuff) is "designed" to have mass appeal. Those who craft it do so because they like the genre and aim to be happy with their own creations, not necessarily because it'll sell or be "radio friendly" (I hate that music). They have a meaning and a purpose to their music and lyrics. Even with Pet Shop Boys, though it may be British pop or dance, their songs have deeper meaning and their words actually try to say something, and carry some weight, that's what I like the most.

Ant - you're a star!
You've, once again, very succinctly described a love of music rather than pop (and by pop I mean 99% of what get's played on radio stations - who are always trying to appeal to a wider audience). Please forgive me in a few years when I plagerise your post verbatum (I'll have learned to use spell check by then!) on this very thread, just to make sure you're still awake/alive/a music/dream theatre junkie!!
Apart from the Pet Shop Boys bit of course
