Daytime Lights

New cars to have daytime lights

I do and I think its a fab idea...and statistics all over Scandinavia have proven its efficacy. Should've been law ages ago.
and for those who think that itll detract from "seeing" motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians....well you'd have to have a serious opthalmological or neurological disorder to not notice them....in which case you'll be found out and shouldnt be driving in the first place.
just ask yourselves...is a Volvo regularly at the scene of a car vs. cyclist/pedestrian accident?

Re: Daytime Lights

When I was taking my bike lessons I was told by the instructors to ALWAYS keep my lights one ... that way other drivers are more likely to see you ...

Re: Daytime Lights

I think its a good idea too. The amount of people who drive in the dark, and in the fog with no lights amazes me.

The only problem is that if you have lights the driver of the car may assume that they have been seen when they haven't. So they may cause a false sense of security.

Re: Daytime Lights

Good idea, and common sense, for motorbikists but you'd have to have a serious opthalmological or neurological disorder not to see a car without headlights on in broad daylight.

Re: Daytime Lights

the thing is that we live in a temperate climate zone and being an island off a massive mainland, our weather system is, well, somewhat f***ed.
this means that broad daylight is pretty scanty in this country...there are several overcast days and when it rains, it can pour....but even in drizzle i find it so much easier to see cars, bikes, anything when their lights are on.
...if having lights on meant that your reaction time was even 0.1 seconds faster, then that may be enough to stop an accident...

am i a volvo driver trapped in the body of an alfa spider driver?

Re: Daytime Lights

In Sweden there are long seasons of very grey dull light.
I don't need headlights on a bright sunny day, or the exrta power consumption. Perhaps we'll soon have to keep our brakes on as well.

Re: Daytime Lights

extra power consumption is miniscule. and we're not in spain to have all year round sunlight.

Heard talk of this ages ago. Thought it had been forgotten. Soon we will all look like Volvo's. Urgh.

Re: Daytime Lights

I am sure Alfa (and others) will find a way of making them look ok.

Anyway I am sure you could fit a switch to turn them of if you wanted to.

Re: Daytime Lights

Lights were designed to see when its dark, putting them all the time is stupid, if you cant see a car in broad daylight without its lights on you need glasses. If you get hit by a car in broad daylight because you never saw it, you should not be allowed out alone.

Re: Daytime Lights

Perhaps they can develop daytime running lights to make the MiTo look less like the illegitimate offspring of an A35 and a Nissan Micra, and more like an 8C?

I live up a narrow lane with a blind kink in it. I tend to put my lights on when leaving the house and returning up the lane.

On my recent RoSPA advanced driving test I put the lights on in the lanes. Then when I got out of the lanes and entered a large village, I turned them off. Further down this main road there was a bus with it's lights on travelling in the same direction. It entered a tunnel of trees and what with the low light conditions there the lights seemed sensible and i wished I'd left my on a bit longer.
