Getting parts for domestic AV equipment is now incredibly hard and very expensive and almost impossible unless you have an account with the manufacturer, ie if you are a JVC dealer you will struggle to get Sony parts unless you have a mate who is a Sony dealer and is willing to order for you. This friendly approach is now disappearing as the business is so cut throat. Last repair I did like this was to a JVC DVD Recorder. The parts cost me nearly £70, diagnosis and repair about four hours, what can you charge the customer bearing in mind the cost of a brand new machine ? Take it from me - not nearly enough, you can't work on Alfa mechanic rates.
The only exceptions to this expensive parts and difficult supply chains were in the Professional Broadcast market, yes the parts are expensive ( Heads for A Sony Betacam VTR were £1000 ) but as the machine was worth £33k relatively inexpensive and easy supply chain to the owners, naturally all professional users.
Glad I retired early and got out of a no win situation.
