Das Boot............

............ is one of my favourite anti war films.

I can't find the scene I wanted on YouTube (where they have to abandon survivors) but this link - with a German U-boat crew singing "Tipperary" is a good indication of the nature of the film.

YouTube - Das Boot (Tipperary Song)

I first saw it 20 odd years ago and I was wandering around the local Virgin store (called something totally inane now - I forget - Aviva maybe?) on Friday - saw it (Film) for £9.00 so bought it - 4 hours of pleasure.

Try it.

Paul.

Re: Das Boot............

yep, an excellent film. i've only seen it once (a long time ago) but it's very powerful and it's not often you get to see a war film from 'the other side'. must've been one of the first war films to focus on the horror rather than the glory of conflict, way before the americans hijacked the idea with the likes of platoon and latterly saving private ryan.

If you think there's no horror in Platoon then you must have a different copy to me.

anyways, Das Boot is probably the greatest war movie of them all. but it HAS to be watched in German, with the english subtitles.

Amen to that - that's how I watch it.

If you cannot bear subtitles however - the main actors all speak English and they dubbed their own voices onto the English speaking version.

I quite liked the "Catch 22" or "Dr Strangelove" take on war
