do you do it yourself or do you get a man in

Have just looked again at the bathroom and thought
"got to change that" but ... what to do ... I've changed the
taps and toilet flush system, but there's no way I can change
the sink and bath ... I am sorely tempted though

Am I headed down a path of woe? ... any experts on here

Re: do you do it yourself or do you get a man in

I'm in two minds here..... I DIY most things.... rewiring (before it became illegal ) plumbing, tiling, flooring etc.

Yes it's a lot of bother but at least you know the jobs been done properly.

Of all DIY activities I dislike plumbing the most... usually because there is no standardisation of fittings.

But I still 'do it myself'

It's cheaper

.....and I don't know how to find a reliable plumber.... when we had an extension built we kept in touch with the plumber that the builder used and we got him to do a couple of jobs. When he fitted a new handbasin he fitted the waste incorrectly so that the overflow didn't work (and of course we only found out when the floor was flooded).

So if it was me I'd just knuckle down and do it.

Re: do you do it yourself or do you get a man in

Hi Quinn, i'm a painter & decorator by trade but have refurbed a flat for my sister, inc new bathroom & kitchen, built a conservatory at home and generally do all jobs for family except gas related work. Most jobs are not as difficult as they seem and if you are practically minded, plan and work slowly and methodically you'll be amazed at what you can do. this is how i have learned and now theres not a lot i wont tackle.
plumbing is easy now with either compression or pushfit fittings you just have to plan it all out carefully. One bonus is you'll have more money to spend on your bella. need any advice.....just give a shout

Re: do you do it yourself or do you get a man in

I'm in the same two minds myself regarding the bathroom.

I've done some DIY in the past and at least I know its right that way. The downside is I have so little spare time. A complete re-tile and new bathroom suite sounds pretty time-consuming but MrsJim thinks I should DIY it and save the tradesman costs so we can have something else done as well.... No rest for the wicked!

I never touch plumbing. I have messed up a couple of times trying. Anything else I will have a go at. Electrics, make a mistake and the fuse goes or you get a shock. Over and done with in a few seconds. Building, cut a bit wrong by a new bit. Plumbing, Water p*ssing everywhere and it causes hundreds/thousands of £s woth of damage. Plumbing/water is evil.

Only if you don't turn the water off at the main stopcock !!
Yes I have read your other post mikeruss

I have put 2 new suites in my bathroom, and it doesn't take too much effort.
As long as you take your time, and work methodically, all should be well

Re: do you do it yourself or do you get a man in

Always have a go yourself before calling someone in. In my experience as long as the supply; e.g. water, gas, leccy is off then not much can go wrong....until you turn it on again that is, but usually you will surprise yourself how easy most plumbing etc actually is.

I know most of it illegal now, but i still plumb in my own gas cookers and such. Why pay £60 for someone to come out and do exactly what i am gonna do?

Pushfit mate, it's easy as. Go for it. It really isn't that big a job. Just get ready to turn the water off again if it all goes pear shaped.

Re: do you do it yourself or do you get a man in

My Dad used to be a plumber - he always preferred people to attempt stuff themselves before calling him in.

They'd always make a cat's backside of it, and he could earn much more putting it right first

DIY.

It really isn't difficult - push fit or solder. Bending pipes is simple. If you really want an easy life buy those bendy rubber/metal mesh connectors for the ends. Save yourself a fortune.

Be prepared to be "creative" if ever you have to make an insurance claim for water leaks though.

Paul.
