Re: The End of the Pier...
Yes very sad, spent some happy times there.
There was ( still is ? ) another pier there up towards Sand Bay, I think it was call Biernbeck ? Anyways there was a bar on the end of that one, just about all there was, and I remember ordering a pint, or two, of Scrumpy there. To get this the barmaid opened a trapdoor in the floor and disappeared before returning with something that looked liked it had just been pulled out of the Bristol Channel, but it tasted lovely !
Just a tic though, a cellar on a pier ????????

Re: The End of the Pier...
Maybe a competing attraction's owners did it.
As with the West Pier in Brighton? (Allegedly.)

Probably with a view to flogging it on at a profit. Oh dear, credit crunch means they can't off-load it and an upcoming collapse in commercial property prices means that profit isn't going to be realised.
Best torch the place and claim now whilst the business can be saved.
Maybe I'm too cynical.

With more and more people tightening their belts and holidaying at home here in Britain, resorts like Weston are doing well at the moment, certainly money being made there.
I don't think it was an insurance job

Re: The End of the Pier...
No official comment as yet, but it is looking like the fire started in fish fryer in the RH tower. Certainly from earliest video footage, that is the seat of the fire it seems.

Yep, Birnbeck. It's still there but derelict and closed to the public. A mate of mine managed to wangle permission for us to visit it about 3 or 4 years ago, and it was like something out of a Scooby Doo cartoon. Big gaping holes in the decking, the rusty remains of fruit machines lying around, and a colony of feral cats living there and doing a great job of catching pigeons by the looks of all the bones and feathers on the ground. I could've taken some really atmospheric photos if I hadn't forgotten my camera. Doh.

Thanks for the info, glad it's still there if only as a ruin. Pity about the end of the pier bar complete with cellar though.

Maybe not. There was a major fire in a huge, and strangely enough just refurbished, property on the seafront of Skegness last year. Work is now well under way on a complete ground up rebuild and should be finished in the not too distant future. Where there's a will................

Southend Pier has had 4 fires in the last half decade, work is now on going to get it back to it's old glory after the last fire in 2005

Re: The End of the Pier...
I was down there through work this morning just as the blaze was being extinguished.... it really is a horrible sight. Being a Bristol boy, I have so many memories of family holidays there, taking girlfriends there for weekends away, etc... It's not going to be the same. At least there are the memories
This may inspire the local council now to try and get the former Tropicana redeveloped sooner rather than later, and I feel that work to start redevoloping ther pier will commence by this time next year.
