Now wouldn't that have been a turn up for the burning books!

Am sure I remember going to Weston-super-mare as a kid
and that it had one of those tide lines, that when it went
out (pity the fire didn't) that the beach seemed to go on
for miles ... what a really sad thing to happen to a building/structure
over 100 years old

Indeed, at low tide the beach goes as far as the eye can see, right out to the island you can see on the horizon (although it really doesn't go out that far).

It burned down about 70 years ago and was rebuilt, so not quite the 100 years you are thinking, but I get the sentiment all the same. It will come back, but not be the Weston Grand Pier as we all knew it
