Things my wife says ...

She's just been out on a bike ride with one of her mates, the first thing she did was complain that her brakes squeaked (see women never happy), I suggested that she didn't use them hard enough and the braking surface is too shiny ...

... no she said they just need oiling

... so I'm out there with the WD40 as we speak (where's a BORED evil smiley when you need one?)

Probably don't need too ... it's a renault after all, I'm sure that brakes will fail without my intervention (he says from inside his glass house next to a pile of stones)

WD40's hopeless - they'll be squeeking again in no time so you'll be getting moaned at again soon. Anyway, if it's a v-brake screetch oiling them won't make a difference - you need to toe-in the pads.

I presume that "toe in the pads" means ... brake properly (i.e. stop a quickly as possible ...???)

Re: Things my wife says ...

Nope, it means line them up so the leading edge of the brake pad hits the rim first

What Hammy says. V-brakes are a bugger for noise anyway and you sometimes just can't fix them.
