Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Just thinking, bad thing about the big cage is it needs tonnes of shavings in it so maybe a small cage would be better, atleast I can have it next to my bed then. Problem with the dinky cages with the tunnels is they're difficult to clean.

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Yeah, that is true enough. A small cage will probably do me for just the one hamster, so it will be easy to clean. I am tempted on the tunneled type (forgot the brand already!), whats the best way of cleaning the tubes - do they come apart for cleaning, or is it a soak and scrub job?

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
They're in sections that fit together I believe, they have to be scrubbed out yeh, I think I still have one like that somewhere, i'm hoping so anyway though I have plenty of money to spend at the moment anyway so i'll happily buy a cage for one hamster, not risking any babies though.

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
It's not that much trust me, bit of birthday money + months wages and I only work one day a week at the moment. :P
I don't know whether to visit one of the small pet shops that are local to me in the nearest town or go to a bigger place which is a bit further away. Not sure where the best place to look would be.

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
I'd go with a small pet shop that has been established for a while. Try asking around, good recommendations through word of mouth is a good thing.
I have heard some horrible and sad stories about animal treatment through the 'chain' pet retailers. I'm not saying they are like that now, or some still are, but just what I have heard.

This larger place isn't part of a chain, it's a large independant shop that does gardening and other equipment as well as pets, their pets are always well looked after but i'm just wondering whether it's worth going all that way if I might find something good closer, saying that though, the larger shop isn't that much further away.

Hmmm a Hamster thread, whatever next
I suppose it's cute!
Stick a keyboard in it's cage when all sorted and log it into TCT... probably provide better drivel here than some!

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Couple of thoughts on what has been said since I last posted:
If you use a non hamster-specific cage, make sure the wires are close enough together. You'd be amazed how small a gap hamsters can squeeze through.
In a way, the rotastak are easier to clean, as long as you get at least two main sections. Because you can keep the hamster in one section while you do the other.
'normal' cages you should be able to get for not much more than a tenner I would have thought. Rotastak you can spend hundreds on if you get carried away!
Hamsters are pretty clean animals, you should find they have a toilet corner and a food storing corner. So you'll probably be able to mostly clean out those corners, and then do the whole cage every other time or something.
My own hamster was called Bacon.
