Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Rotastak are the tubes/accessories you're talking about. Way more expensive than a normal cage, but pretty funky.
One thing to watch out for (although for some reason it always seemed to be gerbils, not hamsters) the animals sometimes gnaw at the tube ends where they connect, and if they do they can chew right through and get out.
Mind you, my knowledge is based on working in a pet shop 15 years ago, so they might have solved the problem by now.
Did you know that all Syrian hamsters in Britain come from a single breeding pair brought in in the 30's? Their life span used to be about 6 months because of how inbred they were, but as the gene pool has got more and more spread out, they can live 3 years and more these days.
Make sure you handle it regularly and it will be a lovely and friendly pet. Don't handle it enough, and it will be scared of you and probably take a lump out of you at some point.

Great info fella
I have read most of this info, but the part about coming from a single breeding pair is very interesting I've heard they can live for up to 6 years now, so that'd be very cool
I'd be a bit daunted about holding it at first (childhood fear), but I'm sure I'll be fine

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
When I saw the thread title I knew it would be some sort of hamster.
Looks like a nice one so enjoy it, makes me think maybe I should get myself a pet sometime, how much did your hamster cost by the way?

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Hehe cool I might go and look for a hamster, my favourite pet ever was either my rat or my hamster because they were so friendly and they were the only ones that let me handle them other than the Degus...they're like hamsters but live longer but they both died and they weren't handle friendly.
At the moment we have a family of tame Robins (birds) that visit us and take food from our hands but it's not quite the same, besides now that they're babies have fledged, they frequent us less now than they did before so we see them less and less now.

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Robins are beautiful birds
Hamsters can be very tame animals if treated well and correctly, this is what has attracted me to them

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
Rats are like that too, but I don't know which one lives longer exactly. :P
Though i'll probably go for a hamster in the long run. I might go look for one sometime this week.
And hope the price isn't too high though I very much doubt it.

Re: I've found myself a new pet!
The only problem with them is that it's really upsetting when they die, especially if you get attached to them.
I know you might not be buying a cage but any idea on how much they cost roughly?

I couldn't tell you, I'll find out when I head to the pet store tomorrow.... unless I have a reasonable offer beforehand
