Things kids say (this is true btw)
My sister-in-law's dad has just been diagnosed as critically ill (he's had a good innings) and doesn't have much longer to live, so my brother-in-law sat his 5yo daughter down and explained that Grandad was going to die soon ... her response ... it's ok I've got another Grandad ... but he's old too!!!
Made me chuckle anyway ...

How healthy - that's exactly how it should be.

I don't know whether to smile at the innocence , or be sad at the truth
As long as no offence was taken

Re: Things kids say (this is true btw)
A friend of mine took his daughter to his grans funeral at the crematorium, and after the hyms the girl said out loud "Are they going to burn Granny?"
Not very nice, but sort of funny as well.

No offence was taken at all, it's the great thing about kids, they just say whatever is in their head ... and you know that it is (almost) always said without malice ...

Re: Things kids say (this is true btw)
I have always believed in telling children the truth. I did this with my own when they were young. When someone dies you tell them so - death is normal.
"Are they going to burn Granny" is a perfectly valid question which deserves an honest answer - they know. The answer has to be "Yes" - then you talk about it - if they want to.

Re: Things kids say (this is true btw)
my niece is two and a half. I cannot bring myself to talk to her 'child-like', in that 'cootchie-cootchie-coo' type of talking. She's not demented; she's got an inquisitive brain, and is a young person, intelligent and learning, sponge-like in what she can absorb. When she tells me 'Ginko, come sit here and read to me' and then snuggles up with me, I melt. Of course, i elaborate on the story books. Mrs Folkes might be a farmer's wife; but she's also a bit of a raver when hubby's not around, and her Anne Summer's parties in between milking are legend among the dale. And for the priceless moments when my little niece is giggling her little head off...why by jimny, that makes life worth living i cannot think of anything more special or fulfilling than those moments. little people rock

Re: Things kids say (this is true btw)
you know i'm teasing in the most inoffensive way possible. Those kids books are turgid...for the narrator alone, they need a bit of creative injection, even if it means nothing to my receptive audience ;-)

Re: Things kids say (this is true btw)
Kids can be extremely insightful and (generally) honest.
Then, they become adults, dumb and (usually) deceitful.

Re: Things kids say (this is true btw)
I'll never forget my middle daughter (think she was around 3 at the time) say in a rather loud and amused way that the man following us in Tescos was "very fat". He was, but he wasnt happy about being reminded of it.
