Re: The Morning After Topgear......

I think people are making too much of this. I have been watching TG for years and never expected anything less than what we got last night. It was never going to be a show about how reliable Alfa's are, especially when they are deliberately old and worn out to start with. This was about how owning an Alfa makes you feel and nothing more. Great show IMO. Come on guys, its just entertainment.

Re: The Morning After Topgear......

Good lord. It's entertainment and should be viewed in that light.

It does not portray Alfa owners as idiots. If anything, it paints them in a positive light - portraying us as people who make sacrafices and accepting a bit of unreliability here and there in order to reep the advantages of Alfa ownership, as was highlighted by JC at the end of the show. 'I can't think of anything I'd like more' - is their higher praise than that from JC when offered use of the 75 for the next 12 months?

As for harming Alfa UK, I've never heard such nonsense. Did their £1500 Porsche piece ruin sales of Porsches in the UK? I think not.

ANY £500 motor subjected to that kind of torture is going to suffer. I think all three cars held up rather well under the circumstances. I'm heading off to Classic Le Mans in my S4 Spider tomorrow and am now convinced more than ever that it will get there and back without a hitch thanks to last nights programme!!

Showing more of the Stanford show, not crashing into each other and making the segment less entertaining that it was would have made the show more like Gardeners Question Time than Top Gear.

It certainly appealled to my sense of humour. I laughed like a drain for the duration.

Re: The Morning After Topgear......

Morning Everyone
I think most people ( or ones that matter ie can afford to buy and run an alfa) are intelligent enough to know that the three alfas that were apparently destroyed (I missed it ) are not representative of all alfas. Yes it a shame that they basically destroyed them but as for this affecting alfa sales in the UK, Do you think ferrari, Lambo and Masser were worried when these guys destroyed some pretty nice old cars...I seriously doubt it.
Anyway, I didnt watch it and therefore I cant say that I enjoyed it...............but thought i would post anyway

Its not the act of what they did to the cars...that was to be expected I mean you have a tired old format - of running into the back of May - doing something to May's car - or ridiculing May...

Clarkson - trying to destroy his car....

And Hammster - playing the straight man...

Bored with it - but not overly worried about the shows format as it was to be expected.

But it was the continuous barbed comments about Alfa's and AOers- all the tired old cliche's and remarks.

Just getting bored of people saying the same old same old....

When we don't have a dealership anymore - then I am sure you will get what I have tried to say....

This show did nothing positive for Alfa or Alfa UK in what Alfa is trying to accomplish....

its a huge task and a lot of effort and money has gone into getting Alfa's presence in the UK re-established and to get brand recognition and improve the public's perception -a slow transition from the past - and Yes they still are having trouble getting it right - but are trying to put things right.

I wonder how much depreciation has now wolloped of our cars after that show

The consumer rightly or wrongly uses topgear as a benchmark of perception of cars...

5th gear is so pro German its laughable - TG used to be middle of the road..and tried to do a balanced show - but slowly it has gone from that - and become more laddish

3 people at work have commented on the show - and passed negative comments on Alfa's - And I bet lots on this forum have experienced the same

Re: The Morning After Topgear......

As a potential Alfa buyer I loved every minute of it and it has not put me off buying an Alfa in the least, nor has it made my missus want to stop me buying my "dream" car....

Everyone in the UK knows exactly what TG is about theses days, if you want serious reviews of a car go watch 5th Gear. Interestingly, as an aside, has anyone seen the reviews the 8C and Brera have been given by EVO magazine....they certainly won't do Alfa any harm in the UK!

Get a grip Chris. There are no rules for where you can post. There are rules about being insulting towards people. And the infractions you have received from this thread are entirely to do with the latter, not the former.
A poster, NOT a mod, asked you not to post if your opinion was negative. You were quite entitled to ignore her request, you aren't entitled to call her a silly little girl - not to suggest that someone else disagreeing with you must be 'too young to understand'.

Are you incapable of arguing your point with someone without stooping to personal insults?

Re: The Morning After Topgear......

as a car enthusiast i think they were quite honest about the brand, they obviously went OTT on things a bit tho. they didnt discuss what alfa was to what it is now as this isnt the point of the show. they had older cars which were obviously uncared for but they got the point across that there is more to these cars than what you see.

ive spoken to a couple of people who arnt interested in cars and they see it as tv comedy and took it on face value

another way of looking at it, is that enthusiasts will be the ones behind the wheel they will appreciate the cars

2001 Silver Alfa Spider V6 with Red Leather of course...1 of 39 in the UK

Re: The Morning After Topgear......

As far as the actual topic of this thread goes - I can see both points of view.
The trashing of the GTV is especially shameful since it was in pristine condition.
The spider was already largely trashed, and to be honest, given how quickly mechanical faults came out, I think the 75 was too.

Re: The Morning After Topgear......

Its Top Gear, they bought some cheap Alfa's and did what they do to any marque in the challenges.

I thought it was great. Alfa came out pretty well. Maybe people will understand what we all love about them, the rollercoaster ride of pain and glory of the car - that's what its like owning a q4 anyway!

Dont take the show to heart - its light entertainment to make you laugh.
