Re: Toasters!

It's broken!

Take it back.

Buy a Dualit and never buy another toaster. Had mine ten years.

GoTo Dualit

The oven grills are swatting useless. The most ridiculous idea of all time. Even on my Baumatic.

I used it twice then bought a commercial Lincat Top'n'Bottom grill, like what you see in greasy spoon cafés.

BRILLIANT!

Propper kippers! Great Bacon, wonderful steaks.

Re: Toasters!

Dualit? Are those the ones which don't pop up like a normal toaster, but unaccountably cost 5 times as much?

That's the ones and it is not unaccountable.

It's known as reliability and quality.

They cost more because they are built properly.

They rarely fail but if they do you can repair them as all the bits are available and always will be.

The design is unchanged since the year dot.

They are the toasters that are supplied to all London fire stations.

Oh yes. They are also a Style Icon.

Re: Toasters!

But a toaster costs what? A tenner? Why would you want to pay 5 times as much for one which is repairable? Just buy another one if it breaks.
And what's the point of a toaster which doesn't pop up? the whole point of a toaster is to be able to go off and do other things without risk of the toast burning.
Is that why they're popular at fire stations? There are plenty of extinguishers around for when someone leaves one unattended?

They may not pop up but they have a timer dial, you set the dial for how long you want to toast your bread for and then you can wander of and finish your copy of playboy in peace nowing you'll have hot toast at the end....oh yes and unlike cheap toasters they toast both sides evenly so you don't need to turn the bread round and do the other side!

Where's my dinner invite, sounds fun.

I don't know why people are having issues with toasters. I've never had any problems. I had a Tefal two slice toaster for about 10 years, and the only reason we ditched it was because the missus wanted everything to match, so we got a Breville which does the job too.

You have completely missed the point baz: completely.

The Dualit is a superb piece of design that hasn't been bettered in forty years. Dualits don't break, or very rarely. If they do you can cheaply resurect your high status piece of equipment.

The point of a toaster that doesn't pop up is that it keeps the toast warm until you are ready to eat it. Also a Dualit works at a much lower temperature than any other toaster to ensure superior quality toast. The elements never glow red!

I didn't say they were popular at fire stations I said they are supplied to all Stations. That is because fire fighters can't break them as they would any other toaster. They are built from cast and polished aluminium and chrome steel. They are put together with nuts and bolts.

The operating controls are aircraft quality.

And if you do want your toast done on one side (like Sting) you can do that on a Dualit by selecting 1 slice and cooking it in the Right Hand slot.

I HOPE WE GET AWAY WITH THIS!

Sounds like too much hard work. What if you want two slices done on both sides?

Re: Toasters!

Interesting. So you set the timer, it toasts the bread, then when the timer dings it turns itself down so that it is just warming, not further browning?

See I used to work in a supermarket a long time agi, and there was one of these in the canteen. If I have interpreted your words correctly, the problem was the ginger Cliff Richard-stalking canteen lady who had no idea how to work it, not that the toaster itself was stupidly designed, as I had always assumed.

I retract my dismissal of Dualits. Although I still think it's a weird thing to spend such a lot of money on (undoubtedly you'll now give me a link to a £20 one to completely shred my dignity )

Almost Baz. When the time runs out (normally 3 mins.) it turns off and the residual heat (the thing has big ally castings at each end!) keeps the toast warm for a short while.

I think the joy of owning the things is a bit like owning an Alfa that's had all the problems fixed and doesn't use oil and has chain drive cams! They are spectacularly beautiful like an Alfa but well built!

Can't find a new one for that money! BUT don't forget they are virtually indestructible so 2nd hand is always a good cheap alternative.

Best new one I could find on FleaBay is: Dualit 2 Slice Toaster Stainless Steel BNIB on eBay, also Toasters, Small Appliances, Kitchen, Home Garden (end time 04-Jul-08 16:51:19 BST) AT £99 inc postage your dignity is safe!
