Re: IT help

Is it well ventilated?

You can change power settings for
some CPUs to trade off power/heat/cooling fan
noise against performance.

Mine has started to stay on after switching off
recently. May have a look at it some time.

No it's on a stand on top of my printer with nothing on top of it or to the sides of it. I've had it about 5 years so was thinking maybe it's on its last legs

Re: IT help

Well the "full of dust" thing is rare but has been known especially if the grills on the airways are blocked.
5 years sounds like it is starting to get on a bit though
I would unplug it all take the case off and have a look see what the insides are like
Good luck

Re: IT help

Just done that cheers Vincent. It was a fair bit dusty on the inside so have give it a good dusting down so th speak and at this very moment it is as quiet as a lamb...so fingers crossed. The hard drive was also not in its fittings correctly so have put that back in place. To be honest it's been a cracking pc up till now. It's a HP Compaq so it wasn't cheap

Re: IT help

Would be worth taking the heatsink of the CPU and giving that a good dusting down. Lots of dust can sit between the fins causing it to run alot hotter then it should be.
Only remove the heatsink if you have some thermal paste (which I doubt you have, since most people dont have it laying about) to reapply when placing it back on.

Otherwise just give it a good blow, or use some compressed air if you have a can of that.
