Re: Does anyone dive?

Cold? That's a bit of an understatement, although it's not as bad as the water in some places in the world.

Interesting...although it's now looking less likely as i have now chased up on the prices and they have magically increased from the headline figure

I'm finding it really hard to source any half decent holiday for less than £3000. That's for two all in. Flights have gone through the roof this year, unsurprisingly...

Looking at Cozumel in Mexico now though

Re: Does anyone dive?

Did anyone just watch that Pacific Abyss program on beeb 2

110m diving with re-breathers those guys are totally nuts

I found myself going through all my pre dive checks as they (the shallow 20m team) were getting ready to dive

Ghosty, Foxy congrats on the Open water Certs

Although watching that programme some of those divers had very un orthodox entry techniques

Re: Does anyone dive?

I just watched it HM. The Manta Rays were amazing. And the Mandarin Fish were stunning.

You are right; those fish collectors are nuts, especially the one who doesn't wear a wet suit.

I can't wait until my next diving holiday in December. I've just bought an underwater case for my camera and hopefully I'll get some good shots. I doubt they'll be of undiscovered species though.

I've never dived off a small boat so all that rolling in backwards thing is beyond me

The first time you do the backwards roll entry is pretty scary, but it's actually fine. As long as everyone in the boat has untangled their fins first.

I've never tried underwater photography. But I bought a Canon Powershot G9 when I bought the Spider so I could take good pics of the car.

It has an underwater setting to adjust the colour balance. I've just invested in an underwater housing for it (+ weights, spare O-ring, silicone grease £££££.....). A big investment, so I hope I get some decent shots. I know the diving in Statia will be fantastic, it's my ability to capture the shots that I'm worried about. It is kind of hard to practice at 40m.

Re: Does anyone dive?

I have a G9 too, and the Canon underwater housing... I've taken the camera in the pool with no problems, but I can't bring myself to take it into the sea (at least until i have decent insurance)

Re: Does anyone dive?

How easy do you find using it in the housing? Assuming I am reasonably comfortable with the camera, is it easy to use underwater? Or will I have to relearn it all with different buttons?

The housing hasn't arrived yet, so I don't really know what to expect.

Re: Does anyone dive?

All the buttons are fine to use. Obviously you can't use the wheel, but theres a shortcut for that (its in the manual)

The only problem i've found is that its difficult to half press the shutter button to focus. It doesn't stop half way, or give you any tactile indication. I guess I'll get used to it eventually. Ideally i'd like to assign the focus to another button, like on my 20D, but I don't think you can do that with the G9

Re: Does anyone dive?

I'm still wading through the manual but I haven't found anything that says you can remap the focus.

Thanks for the info FR, I'm looking forward to trying it out.
