39k for driving all day with flammable liquid , traffic jams sounds reasonable to me, most office types spend half the day on the net msming friends and the likes
so hope they get it, there is a national shortage so get a licence if you fancy the wages the early starts and instant dismissal if you have an accident

How often do you hear of tankers blowing up though? I think your chances of being killed driving a tanker are less than if you were driving a car. Cars crash all the time...
I would do the job for 39K a year if I could.

£39k for driving a shift, not all day.(With the tachograph hours thats not too long !! )
traffic jams are a hazard of any driving job.
Instant Dismissal if they have a Blameworthy accident (ie negligent)

Re: Panic buying petrol - PLONKERS
A serious side issue of this is that the pizza delivery man said that they may have to stop deliveries as fuel seems to getting hard to get around here.
£39k for driving a tanker is unjustified, how did they come to this inflated figure ? And isn't the raise currently on offer over 7% ? How many of you managed that big an increase this year ?

It's because they are classed by the Union as Engineers rather than drivers IIRC.

They have to know how to hook up pipes and switch pumps on etc.
Does that mean firemen are engineers who get paid upto £50K then?

Re: Panic buying petrol - PLONKERS
Heh when I heard about this I went out to get some petrol for two reasons.
1. I was about to run out
2. If I left it any longer than there would be a huge line of idiots waiting to fill up therefore annoying me and leaving me waiting for ages to get some much needed fuel that isn't going to run out anyway. *sigh*

Thats the trouble with people by and large. Instead of striving to get their own industy up to a similar wage, they seek to brign others down to the lowest denominator.
I say best of luck to anyone who can get a bit of extra money or better conditions.
I wouldn't want to drive a tanker (or anything on our badly maintained over congested roads for that matter) for any amount of money, so good on 'em.

The difference is that you have a good education and have a career. Your salary will increase according to the laws of supply and demand. And I'm sure your abilities will always be in demand.
A tanker drivers wages can only increase by holding the public to ransom.

That is unfair. They have been legally blockading
their place of business.
The fuel issues are a direct result of panic buying
by the public themselves.
Compare and contrast:
Road haulage drivers are currently blocking Nice aeroport
in protest at fuel prices:
Nice.maville.com Lundi, les transporteurs manifestent à l'aéroport

I agree what they are doing is legal..... but if they were transporting fish (for example) would this sort of action result in their pay being increased?
I just feel that they are aware of how much economic damage they can do and are using that to push for a pay settlement that bears no relation to their real value.

I've already made my views on so called 'panic' buying clear
