Re: 3 second kettle

They are the same guts as a coffee machine, without
the bit to hold the capsule of coffee.

Real eco gadget.

Less electricity used to boil water you aren't
going to use.

Re: 3 second kettle

Ok, so it's 24 hours with my new baby

The way it works, as pointed out is the same principle as a coffee maker. You fill the resevoir up with water, and at the press of a button it releases a set amount (a mug full) through a heating element and it comes out of the spout just below boiling.
It filters the water as it does (we need this due to the very hard water) and you can also press another button for cool filtered water.

Economy wise, it makes a big difference, as you're only heating a mug full at a time , and it's 2.5kw (most kettles are higher)
It's kind of like a shower heating water quickly compared to running a bath with a hot water cylinder I guess.

You can stop the fill by pressing the button again, or hold it down if you need more water or just a bit.

How often do you need to replace the cartridge and what do they cost?

Re: 3 second kettle

I got one of these badboys for Christmas and haven't touched a kettle since.

You just press a button and out comes a regular sized mug amount. There are different versions, one is just a button, and the duluxe version has a mug size dial so you can choose between a cup, mug or large mug. Otherwise with the regular one you press the button down and let it do it's thing, or hold it down to get a certain amount.

You're meant to change the filters every 500 cups worth, there is a light that goes on telling you to change it, although after the first time I haven't figured out how to reset the light and have lost the manual (any help Zulu?), the filters are about £5 each.

The water doesn't come out at boiling, it's actually about 80 +/- degrees, but that doesn't matter as you can drink your tea soon after making it without having to wait.

The only thing I have against it is that it's bloody noisy!

Oh, and the thing apprently heats the water with vibrations or something, not a traditional element.

I think it is posh people who put the milk in first, something to do with protecting the fine china or something.

Re: 3 second kettle

Looks like you replace the filter every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how many cups you have, approx 500
(In my case that will be every week )

Re milk first or not, the reason is that fine bone china could withstand the heat of boiling water, and as only the richest could afford it, they put the milk in afterwards. The rest of the masses could only afford earthenware clay china, which would have a habit of cracking when exposed to high heat, so milk in first cooled it down.

I had to write a scientific study on this during my A levels. Apparently Tea tastes BETTER if the milk is poured in first
Go figure

I really know far too much about this subject. And to think my friends think I'm odd for being obsessed about Italian cars..

Re: 3 second kettle

Ahhh, that makes sense. I've never put milk in before, simply because I always get the amount of milk wrong and end up making a stupidly weak cup of tea

If you've still got your manual, could you check how to reset the filter warning light for me? It's driving me insane.

Re: 3 second kettle

how to reset the filter warning light
It appears that you need to

"simultaneously press the Hot water button and the ambient water button for at least 5 seconds. After this, the warning light will go out, and the appliance will have recorded the cartridge change..."

Hope that helps

Thoroughly recommended
The Chabako temae tea ceremony takes 35 - 40 minutes.

Now that would allow me time for a quickie (if I skip the foreplay).

Re: 3 second kettle

I bought one of these kettles last year and it is now gathering dust in the garage,ie its rubbish.I prefer my water hot and not warm as you get with this piece of over-hyped kit.Sorry,it a waste of time and money.

Re: 3 second kettle

Really good for those who can't lift full ketles any more. So after buying one for my grandparents I had to get one for myself.

Got mine last year and I love it. So handy and quick when I have people round.

Re: 3 second kettle

Water must be boiling when it hits the tea bag or tea, otherwise it doesn't infuse correctly - it will taste nasty.

It's also the reason why you should only put the milk in 1st if you've made a pot of tea. If you make the tea in the cup, the milk already there will stop the tea brewing properly.

I don't normally get all hoity-toity but here endeth the lesson - tea is important!

Re: 3 second kettle

We got one for christmas,

we replaced this weekend for a proper kettle.

Filter needs to be replaced every 3-4 weeks
Water not hot enough, meaning you have to put the cup in the microwave for 30 seconds - there goes the environmental credentials.
(if you put a cup in the microwave with the handle facing the back, in 30 seconds the microwave stops with the handle facing you- works with mine )
Noisy
Vibrates across the worktop

Other than that its alright
