ipod problem  please help me :(

My ipod has approx 3000 tunes on it that I loaded from my own cd collection via itunes. Recently my pc hard disc died a death and took everything with it.

My question is, can I restore my tunes back onto my pc from my ipod? At the moment my level of knowledge is close to zero and it would appear that itunes wants to erase everything on my ipod before it will load any more. I don't like that option

Please help an old man who is fast losing his grip on technology

Ah the piece of **** that is
iTunas: Not letting you do
exactly what you want with your music.

I want to be able to sync certain things
like Outlook address book from my laptop
and other things from the PC but I can't.

It always wipes the things that aren't
on both computers from the iPod.

I dont think you can upload songs off your Ipod back onto you computer, depending on the settings you had your Ipod to you can plug it into other peoples (or a new )computers and your songs will still be on you Ipod.

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

When you next plug you Ipod in you need to change the setting so its 'manual'! That way no matter what computer you plug it in to it wont want to wipe everything already on you ipod.

When i get home Gibbo I'll look on Itunes and give you the details to set it to 'manual'.

Do you have any idea what 'number' version of Itunes you are running?

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

I believe if you install itunes to a new PC you can set it to read from ipod to PC. You then plug in your ipod and register it to the new machine and the PC will download the files from the ipod.

DO NOT plug in your ipod until you have checked the itunes settings to read from the ipod.

DO NOT take this as gospel either - I think this is correct but I am not 100% sure.

This must be covered on the iTunes website or could be asked of Apple.

No probs.

I'll let you know when I get home if no one already does so before i return.

The only problem with 'manual' is when you upload new songs into Itunes you will then have to 'drag and drop' them onto you Ipod (but if my dad can do it then your be ok).

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

Sorry to hear that Gibbo. I changed my computer recently and I put the iTunes on an external drive, didn't help. Couldn't get the thing back on to the Hard Drive , so had to put the installation disc in. This, I thought, deleted all the library, hours later found the files in the recycle bin.........

Didn't affect the iPod at all and my first thought was to pull them back from the iPod. Spend a long time and couldn't find any way of doing this.

Love the iPod for what it is, despise iTunes. There was recent Thread about this so perhaps there is something in there to help ?

Hope you find a solution.

But at least with Itunes you can keep the songs you purchase on up to 5 different PC's.

If you have bought any music from Mircosoft recently then your be screwed come September if you get a new PC or laptop

MSN Music customers lose *all* their music the next time they buy a new PC - Boing Boing

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

A good way to avoid this problem is to back up all your music ( and other stuff such as photos) on to an external hard drive which can be transferred between computers. I have Itunes loaded on to my laptop but just plug in the hard drive with all the stuff on it.

But the above doesn't help Gibbo.........

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

My PC recently went "pop" too. All that I did was remove the hard drive and plug it into my new PC and simply dragged the Itunes folders across. Installed iTunes to the new PC and registered my ipod. It all worked perfectly.

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

Way back when i first got on i used sharepod to make my ipod (2ndgen) work as a hard drive to transfer all the music files from my pc to my laptop.

This was back when itunes was still using green icons, version 4 something i think and ive had no need for it since so cant say how it works with new ipods/itunes but it may be worth investigating.

SharePod

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

As far as i can recall any iTunes actually purchased from the Itunes store will always remain in your store account so you shouldn't lose then. As far as other tracks from CDs etc I think you can access them from your pc when you plug the iPod in it shows the Ipod in the left hand menu, but you will have to make sure that the sync settings are in manual otherwise it'll delete them off your iPod when you plug it in. I can't guarantee that will work but I'm 90% certain. Word of advice always back up your downloaded music onto a re-writeable DVD. (Use a DVD as you get a lot more storage capacity that on a CD Rom). It takes a while but it's worth it in the long run. I've got about 2000 tracks on my PC that would take ages to re-load. Good luck

Uhh.... you wish that'd be how it works, but it isn't.

How would Apple make money from disk
failures etc if it worked like that?

Once you've downloaded from the iTunas store that's it.
If you loose it you have to buy it again.

Thanks Apple.

You can authorise 5 PCs to play files
but iTunas store doesn't work like a library
as say Audible does for audiobooks.
You cannot re download stuff

DRM is the devils work.
If you buy something you should be able to listen to
it any way you want to. Which is why buying
CDs is the preferred way of getting content.
