Try Ephpod or a simple way via this Lifehacker suggestion.

Thumbs Up Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

You can do it. You need to download some nifty software off the internet called podutil. The reason apple make it hard is to stop you from going to your mates house, loading your ipod up and then putting it onto your computer.

If you search for it some sites charge but I dug around and got it for free.

I used it to fill up my pc with music that I had transferred across the Atlantic.

This is called sticking it to the man.

The quick answer is 'yes you can'.

The wife sent her work laptop back to her head office a while back to have software updates etc. installed and when it came back the bustards had wiped iTunes and all her music files off.

We found some free software that enables you to bring your files back from your iPod into iTunes, but it takes a while (depending how much music you've got on there).

Can't remember the specific name of the piece of software but there are lots out there if you do a search.

Good luck.

Any idea if a memory stick would serve the same purpose as a rewritable DVD, as I think you could get a lot more storage space on one of them......

The ultimate iPod dock! I want one.

Don't think it would fit in my house though.

But then if I had one of those I wouldn't need a house!

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

Good news you got it working Gibbo. There's a piece of Software called MediaMonkey on the net that will replace iTunes alltogether and lets you transfer tunes from the iPod to the computer as easy as copy-paste.

It organises your PCs music collection, doesn't set up autosyncs and automatically delete everything like iTunes. Far easier to use, lets you take control over your own music, don't have iTunes installed on any of the PCs I use after using MediaMonkey.

... Actually, got Rockbox installed on the iPod so I can copy-paste folders of music straight from Windows/ Linux without using any software. Bit of a fiddle to set up but it makes the iPod much more friendly.

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

Yes, I was just going to say PodUtil too - we had the same issue and it's been very useful on more than one occasion.

I would also say that, if it's the first time you ask, Apple does sometimes reinstate your iTunes store account for a one time download. I sent them a very very nice letter and they very kindly reinstated my iTunes account within the day. It's always worth asking.

I then bought a MyBook external drive and so everything gets backed up to that. External drives are so cheap, it's reallly worth getting one now. (I use Cobian backup software which is free.)

They certainly are.

I've got two unused sets if anyone wants them.

Here is a very thorough and informative article on uploading media from an iPod into iTunes. The bottom 1/2 of page 2 is useful for those with a bit of IT knowledge, otherwise page 3 discusses 3rd party applications.

Re: ipod problem  please help me :(

I just caught this thread. I had a similar issue a while back and used Music Rescue.

You can read from the iPod as an external hard drive but the problem is the way the iPod files the music. It certainly doesn't make things easy.

Having said that, I find Itunes easy enough to use day to day. It's fairly straight forward and does everything I want it to.

I binnned mine in favour of some Bose ones. They are absolutely brilliant. You get a removable rubbery insert for your ears in 3 different sizes so they will fit just about any ear and they are really sound deadening.

On a busy commuter train all you can hear is your music and you don't annoy other people with the usual sound leakage associated with in ear headphones because it is virtually non existant.

They cost about £80 but well worth it.
