If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

... shouldn't the governments of the world be introducing
rules to remove catalytic converters from cars and promoting
more lean-burn engine technology?

(Especially now the price of platinum is x5
greater than a few years ago.)

Discuss.....

Re: If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

That is the very foundation of my argument. The message i get is, "as long as everyone pays more tax the world will be fine," not "take those cars off the road! Only buy cars with an H on their bonnets." Total borrocks.

It won't happen, as long as the government sees the opportunity for a ready source of income...

Mrs Thatcher was unable to stop the large company interests in cats, she stood alone against them, as an industrial chemist she knew that lean burn was a far better answer. Catalitic converters are inefficient.
The precious metals people have made a fortune out of them.

I was at school at the time, but I'm sure
that's the way I remember it being explained too.

Re: If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

It's been a while since we've had a CO2 thread (must be almost a week!!!) ...

... as far as I can tell there is no thought for the environment, it's ALL about the tax ... if CO2 was really that bad, then why isn't the government trying to encourage biofuels ... after all when you grow the crops for biofuels that actually take CO2 out of the air ... this would make cars actually carbon neutral ...

... of course the tax on biofuels go up at the same rate as the oil based fuels ..

oh well

Now, now, this is a cat specific thread.
Biofuels are just a US farming subsidies scam
that other govs have fallen for...

...hang on....

... just like catalytic converters!

We've been had again!

I totally agree that the government have grabbed the issue with both hands and use it as a tax stick to hit everyone with.

but forgetting biofuels, why, when we've had the technology to mass produce and run electric, zero-emmission vehicles capable of 100mph+ and sub 8 second 0-60mph performance since the late 1980's, are we still driving round using technology that has it's roots in the 1800's?

Because for too long there's been too many people of power with their hands in too many pies.
Now the environmental lobbying has grown to the size that it can't be ignored, the clever politicians have turned it into taxable opportunity number 1.

And the tax hikes raise the publics vitriol at the environmental lobby, instead of at the politico's themselves, and the with regard to that actual situation, status quo is maintained.
the public lose, the environmental lobby lose. The governments win. Again.

The War On Terror is over...
...The Terrorists won.

Re: If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

OMG ... I agree with HST ... the trouble with electric cars is, where does the electricity come from? if it's from carbon based power stations then we don't really "win" ... obviously if we can use other forms of generation then everyone(?) is happy ... apart from the fact that electric cars sound rubbish!!!

Sorry we're getting this thread away from Cat's ... I'm sure that there's some eurocrat that would want to see cat's put onto electric cars, just so everything is fair

Re: If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

An electric car charged by renewable electrical energy would be ideal. But at the moment the only practical alternative to fossil fuels is nuclear power. I can't help thinking the enviroment lobby has shot itself fairly & squarely in the foot with both barrels - according to their philosophy.

Re: If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

Okay most alternative fuel sources need
electricity or oil anyway.

But I'm talking about CO2 emissions.
If you de-cat a car how much CO2
reduction do you get?

Would the car produce 1/3rd, 1/4th, ??? the CO2 a cat'd
car does?

If so, then with CO2 being such a massive problem
those cats should be coming off asap!

Decatted car would be worse or no better. CO would quickly oxidise to CO2 anyway, but we could have the nice toxic smog to go with it.

SO why do they bother with the CO->CO2 part of
the 3-way cat then?

CO's toxic (It was CO that killed you if you stuck your head in a gas oven), CO2 isn't.

Re: If we're meant to be so concerned about Carbon Dioxide...

The production on cement creates 80 times the amount of CO2 than that of the worlds air travel combined yet we hear nothing of this massive polluter.
