'Good News' TV

I'm thoroughly sick of 'Bad News' TV.

Why isn't there a TV channel that concentrates on the positive aspects of life.... are we really so depraved that we only want to watch police chases and hear about the bad things in life.

I've just watched a TV programme called 'Seaside Rescue' that shows a group of people who's only concern is to save Life.

I'm an active supporter of the RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Institution and am always surprised at how many people don't realise that all the crews are volunteers and all the money is totally funded from voluntary donations (no government money) .

There are a great number of people out there that are selfless when it comes to the crunch.....

Why is it that we don't have a TV channel devoted to these people and all the others that selflessly focus their lives on helping others?

Would you watch it?

No.

Sorry but I'd die of boredom after I heard the third person in a row saying

"I was just doing my job".

Paul.

Bl1mey Paul you have really surprised me.... You were someone who I would have guessed would have preferred a more positive view on life.

To me someone who says "I was just doing my job" is someone to be admired.... rather than the "I was doing it in an attempt to be a celebrity" brigade that we seem to be bombarded with.

(I ended a sentence with a preposition again )

[ edit : Sorry Paul I was putting words in your mouth]

Re: 'Good News' TV

I think it's because of a book I read when I was about 15 - called "Very Ordinary Seaman" by JPW Malalieu (possibly spelt differently). I bought it again secondhand on Amazon a few weeks ago.

Basically it described life on a warship on the Russian convoys in WW11. There is a scene where they are all listening to the radio and hearing interviews with people who have all been awarded medals for heroism. All the acts of heroism are described and each "hero" says that they were just doing their duty.

One of the characters listening gets really fed up with this and says something along the lines of

"One day someone will come along and when asked about what they did will say - Yes I was bloody brave and I thoroughly deserve to get a medal for that. If they do and I survive this war I will seek him out and shake his hand".

I don't think purely good news is necessarily positive - we need a balanced view to reflect what we all are - a bundle of contradictions.

I am positive - but you don't get to be that way by treating the bad stuff differently.

Paul

(Sounding pompous but not caring about it).

Re: 'Good News' TV

I believe there is a news website which works on this very principal - only covers good news stories.
On a quick google search, this might be it:
Good News Network
but I haven't checked, so might be rubbish.

Yes ..... balance......... I guess that is what I'm on about.... the News programmes just seem way out of balance......

Is the story at the end of the news about a Panda who can't get it up not good enough for you?

I tend to watch National Geographic, Discovery, The Learning Channel and others along this vein. They have lots of positive programs and I learn something too.

The news is reported/created/spun/added on to, to dismay us. A little of that type of program goes a long way.

Re: 'Good News' TV

Here's some good news for you (well for me at least) - I just bought a new Spider and joined this group.

I'll not be watching much TV at all once the cars delivered.

I do.: Couldn't be without swinging the dish to 13 deg East, for some interesting light entertainment. Loads of FTA channels out there with comical stuff to make me chuckle. Leaving the more serious, for the more serious.

I, for one, would appreciate a more positive spin on the news, though it is a tough line to walk without sounding too silly (often the Japanese newscast here are laughable in their attempts to portray good news).

Re: 'Good News' TV

I don't watch much news, refuse to watch deadenders or bore a nation street. I prefer watching factual programs, but I don't mind a good sick and twisted drama/comedy, Dexter being top of my list of late and even then I am part way through season two due to there being nothing else on, so I hunted it out on the interweb.

The trouble is, there is no the money in the industry now to make decent dramas or factual stuff. Add to that the number of channels we now have to fill up, and you end up with channels full of drivel, and the BBC and ITV/C4 with not as much money available to spend.

I am sick of seeing crappy reality show with Z list celebs dancing or skating for months on end in prime time, or bloody west end shows trying to find a god damn maria or oliver.

I think I need a new job!

Yup Classic you are spot on ... i think that most of us admire and respect fire fighters, RNLI, Paramedics etc etc and occasionally its good to see some of the things they do but too much would de- sensitise us to their work .. i think we all need to hear about bad stuff ..but a bit of something good every now and then is good for the soul ...

Re: 'Good News' TV

To be fair, it's not what you'd call good news. Certainly not from the Panda's point of view anyway.
