My external hdd wouldnt power up so after many checks have discovered tat the disk itself will not spinup.
The dam thing is not being recognised by the pc.
Not happy as there is 3years of data and my life on that disc (drive is only 7months old...). It now all seems up the swanny. I am a bit annoyed. No, I am really annoyed (but not as much as |I was when that child threw a egg at my car).
So any one any ideas?????
How much to send drive away and get them to do a recovery???

Feel slightly better now.......

Must take the car out will smile again me thinks.

Thanks

Oops wrong forum please move to correct one sorry

First thing to try would be open
up the enclosure, pull the HDD
and stick it in another drive enclosure
or cheap SATA / USB interface.

eg

What Nev said, is the enclosure...

USB
USB2
Firewire
Powered by your computer
Powered by a Dedicated Power Supply

What make of External Drive is it?
Do other Devices work on the port that this is plugged into?

Re: @:@?>:@?>@

took the drive out of the enclosure and connected it up directly to my pc with a ide cable.
Nothing .........I tried it on cable select slave and master.
It does try to spin up then just stops??????
It did get hot in the enclosure though ...could this be related (showing around 59 degrees).
Not recognised in the bios on startup or in disc managment(am running vista ultimate).
put it back in the enclosure and then tried it on another pc.
It installed usb drivers and then told me it was ready to use . however still not showing in windows.
Fearing the worse.....how do I tell my wife I have just lost 3 years of photos and work and OUR life??????
I am so dead ......
I want to be buried with my alfa make it happen if I go

Thanks

Re: @:@?>:@?>@

The device is a usb2 or network (NDAS)
It does have its own power supply.
Power getting through (the fans are spinning.....switches between usb2 and network options. So I am pretty sure its not the enclosure.
If it was the enclosure the HDD would still power up by the pc.
Thanks

just realised its my 200th post yeah baby shaking that ass.......

Re: @:@?>:@?>@

I've heard from guys that putting the drive in the fridge for a while to cool it down has sometimes given the drive a very temporary lease of life, sometimes it lasts long enough to copy everything off it. Probably won't work but it can't hurt to try.

Company in Ireland advertising to repair for €400 (usually €700). I'd imagine companies over in England would be in around the same price. (Data Recovery Hard Drive Recovery Hard Disk Recovery Raid Recovery I don't work for them and have never used them, just providing the link for reference)
