Re: Mac or PC
They'd better hurry up bringing out Windows 7, people are losing faith in Vista. Companies won't upgrade corporate computers, why shoudl they? What extra would they get out of it to justify the expense and effort really?
Personally, at home I'm going to Linux Ubuntu next rather than Vista when the new version's out next week. |

Re: Mac or PC
They ainst sweating it. MS is such a big corp
it could F-up 5 times in a row and still turn a profit. Win7 is now due 2009, last I heard. What they should do is pull an "Apple", ditch their PoS DOS based "integrated" GUI/OS and base a completely new "Windows" on Unix. At least it'd be a bit more secure.

Re: Mac or PC
Most companies who are still runnign legacy apps are starting to play with Virtualisation, it is the future of computing in the business arena. Soon it won't matter what hardware or os you run as all applications will be virtualised to run independent of platform as will your dekstop and any storage you 'perceive'.
the virtualisation marketplace is a very happening one, HP recently brokered a deal to include an embedded hypervisor in the hardware architecture freeing up the devices from the drivers, most issues are at a driver level regardless of platform. |

Please...... never mention powerpoint! That has got to be one of the worst applications in the world ever!

Re: Mac or PC
Not neccesarily, I used to know an artworker who could make it work magic because he actually knew how to use the software rather than just use templates.

Re: Mac or PC
I have to agree services are in the spotlight and being able to continue services by moving from one virtual machine to another at the drop of a hat has been my motivation. I've been a services person all along but see that moving workstations out in this manner is also beneficial. I gzipped a pile of servers to a dvd the other week and they all fired up just fine on another box for failover purposes :-)

Re: Mac or PC
Oh please, don't try and tell me how to do my job - I can make it work just fine thank you. But when a client wants to add flash video etc into powerpoint it really doesn't like it. Also I never use templates!!! I don't think I would be classed as a designer if all my work looked like what someone else had produced. Powerpoint is a nightmare to work with and fights you all the way - if you compare it to Director then you would realise what I am talking about. I am not saying that Powerpoint doesn't have a market - it does, and that's the cheap end of presentations.

Re: Mac or PC
I agree nev but as I said I am a designer so I produce what the client wants - I can only offer so much advice. When their marketing manager says I want every bell and whistle going I have to give it to them and its at that point that PP shows its limitations. It is easy to use but is also a pig at times.

Considering the customer was very 'high design' who wanted the work doing to emulate their website I think the guy who worked on it to produce the sales toolkit did an awesome job. |

Re: Mac or PC
I am sure it was an awesome job. I have produced several highly animated powerpoint presentations for large PLCs like BP etc - however they are not self contained and always have limited functionality. Obviously we are both thinking of different markets here as I deal more with high end products and companies.

Re: Mac or PC
Acer bought TI's computer business years ago
and also recently acquired Gateway. (And so Packard-Bell?) I got an Aspire L100 instead of an Apple TV last year which is a cracking unit. And two people I know bought L5100s on the back of my purchase, (instead of laptops) which are even better machines: Acer Aspire L5100 Model ID 92.G3L9Z.DYJ 1 x Athlon X2 BE-2400 RAM 2 GB - HDD 1 x 500 GB - DVD±RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM Radeon X1250 - Gigabit Ethernet - S/PDIF out - HDMI All for ~£350, can't grumble at that!

clone Macs soon. Mac cloner Psystar moves, still trading - The INQUIRER Might push Apple's reality-distortion-bubble pricing down a bit. (If true.) |
