Ian - you are far too young to say such a thing.

1/2 day on a decent Mac and you could extend your horizons - trust me - I am ancient but can still appreciate both.

Paul.

Re: Mac or PC

Hi Jon,

To avoid any Microsoft nastyness you could think about buying iWork software package. Only 50 quid I think.

This gives you the equivalent of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

It will open all your PC docs and be able to export as PC docs if you need to send anything to unfortunate PC owners.

Much nicer interface than Word etc etc, with all the integration with the other 'i' applications.

Enjoy!

DG

Re: Mac or PC

About 18 months ago I created a MAC on an old scrap hard disk to run as a dual boot on my PC. (boot either XP, W98 or MAC) This cost me absolutely nothing, which was about what it was worth.
I run the PC as this is where my usable stuff is, and I didn't really develope the MAC, so I used some parts off the old hard disk for repair purposes. I also run Linux occasionally.

Re: Mac or PC

Sorry to dig this one back up!
But its got to be Apple all the way I have been using Apple Mac's for about 14 years now (II SE was my first - utter crap ) But honestly if you want to spend all day tweaking and updating drivers etc then buy a PC - if you actually want to be productive and get something done then buy a MAC
As for the comment about Mac's having the same problems as PC's - that's just wrong - for one I have never had a virus/trojan horse/adware or spy ware in my whole 14 years of using an Apple and I have never had antivirus software. Also I am sure there is some statistic out there about how over 75% of all apples built and sold are still in use and working - but that could be an internet legend But I have never had any problems or any type of hardware failure - basically we are talking about the company here who invented the home computer. They took their idea to IBM who replied by saying they could see no market for a home computer and they wouldn't be interested in investing in the idea. Apple then went on to invent the mouse and the whole user interface - before Apple did this there was no such thing as clicking on something on your screen - it was all computer programming codes. Many of the things you now take for granted on your crappy PC's were invented by Apple.
As for the hardware - items are chosen and the machines purpose built to work with these items. Not like a frankenstein of a PC. Obviously many many of my friends have PC's and I can't even begin to think about the amount of times they have had software problems, driver problems, viruses or replaced hardware. But I should think its most months! I just tend to smile at this - I will admit that there was all sorts of problems at Apple a long while back when Steve Jobs left the company and they decided to sell out (like windows) and allow other companies to build clone macs. These were some of the worst machines I have ever encountered - but that is just a distant memory now and the company has been on the up ever since he returned. Currently I have at home a Mac Pro with studio display, Powerbook, old G4 tower (never used) and at work a nice new shiny iMac 24" - every one of these is easier to use and way better designed than any PC.
Doing web and multimedia design as part of my job I sadly have to use a PC also (why can't everyone use macs???) and I hate them. Vista is just a rip off of the 2001 version of OS X and they have tried to tie so many bells and whistles on it that you have to have such a high speck machine just to run the operating system. Now look at an Apple even the very latest version of OS X will run on an 8 year old machine. Millenium bug - what was all that about? All apple computers had been designed to work past that date since 1984 - that shows you their forward thinking. As for the comment that someone made about having problems sending english emails to foreign countries - can only be user error mate. I do this every week to places like Dubai without a problem.
As you can see I am a very big Apple head I will stop my rant now! Thanks for listening and good night

Ouch - don't know if I should laugh or cry now!
But then I noticed you are batting for Linux - that I can handle but if you had been a PC man well...........

Of course you realise that Linux will never be as stable or good a Unix (what OS X is built on).

Re: Mac or PC

I just prefer PC hardware and layouts, replaceable parts available everywhere without costing an arm and a leg. I only prefer PCs because I know my way around them. XP is stable enough for most of the stuff I do but Linux is better because of the geek factor and the snobbery of it. I've replaced the iPod firmare with Rockbox, don't like the simplicity of Apple stuff and don't like the instability of Windows stuff. Linux is somewhere inbetween.

Macs and PCs both have their places, just giving you a bit of a wind-up there!

They are just computers.

If you really want stability, use Solaris.

Solaris is stable - but I couldn't do my job on, lack of software.

Nev - these things are my life (very sad I know) but they take up more of my life than the Alfa does. Would you say your Alfa is just a car? If you want stability get a German car

If it's 'just a car' a Fiesta will get you from A to B, reliably and cheaply. It'll do the job!

Re: Mac or PC

I thought all the gamers in the world used PCs?

Macs are good for developing web apps, music and pretty pictures. Pcs are good for working in the real world and playing games on.

The real world? If you replaced all the PCs in the average office with Macs the productivity would plummet. One or 2 people would know what to do with them. The rest of them wouldn't have a clue, the guys here struggle with a TV remote, a Mac would confuse the hell out of them.

We've just had Office 2007 installed on our laptops here and Im spending half my day explaining where the buttons have gone rather than doing any work (it's cutting into my precioius Alfa forum time!). Christ knows what confusion there would be if Macs ended up in the real world.

Oh so you mean people typing letters and using office
I would rather not live in that world - I take your point though everyone I know has asked what the heel has happened to office, it hasn't just changed a little, they have changed everything!
But I am sure after a day on a Mac they would all be converted

Re: Mac or PC

That's it, the real world, the big glass buildings full of engineers that make our buildings and bridges stand up, the ones that make our cars go along, that get fresh water to your house every day of the year without fail, keep the power running, make sure when you flush the bog it all goes to the right place.

It's as if they've shuffled the menus around for the sake of charging for a new version of Office, good ol' Microsoft bloatware. I can't see that many new features to make it worth the money, a couple of pretty colours here and there but give me Office 2003 back, please. I thought that was Autodesks tactics with AutoCAD, caharge the world again for the same old software with prettier buttons!

Agree with you on that - but obviously a lot of the design that goes into the utilities/facilities/construction are also carried out on Mac - not just the advertising of them

And you must admit the reason all the others use PCs is becuase Bill Gates was greedy/smart and licenced his software for $1 where as Apple tried to keep it in house. Apple were way too big at the time they thought they were being smart/greedy and could get everyone to use their software and hardware.

Re: Mac or PC

To be honest I haven't seen a single Mac in the aerospace, construction or utilites engineering sectors, all the drawings have to be in AutoCAD/ Catia/ Pro E. Documents have to be in Word or pdf formats, spreadsheets in Excel, engineering industry standard software is all built around Microsoft.

Apples have their place, just not in engineering, great if you want to make music or pictures or develop flashy graphics, good for the home user because they work without going wrong

I know absulutely sweet FA about computers, but definitely intend to go the Mac route next time, based on the good opinions offered on AO. Sick and tired of 'pfaffing' about with this stupid windows laptop! Time to move on, almost.:
