Welsh Language !

Of course the answer is, if it bothers you, .....LEARN it You are living in Wales where Welsh has been spoken for centuries - even if today many either choose not to or can't be bothered.

It's nice to hear it in local shops but I know what you mean though, if they switch for the sake of it it's not on but people in the office here flit in and out of Welsh randomly, never came across anyone doing it on purpose, I'm from the westcountry originally and my thick bumpkin accent stands out here. Hasn't caused any aggro with people swapping to Welsh - and if they did they were probably talking about something personal and didn't want me to hear what they were saying anyway. It's no biggie.

Girlie's learning Welsh along with sign language, I don't stand a chance, think I'll stick with visual basic for my 2nd language!

Its not the fact that its spoken in Wales - its the facttheey change to it from English when they here a different accent.

It's not on if they do it just because they hear another accent however people round here (lazy South Wales Welsh speakers) turn it on and off when they haven't got the right word so it could be coincidence. Also, if I was talking to a mate about a personal matter, I would too (if I could speak another language), I wouldn't want people earwigging my conversations.

Could be paranoia, could be a bunch of a-holes, I don't know.

True but if it happens when DR goes into a shop they suddenly change then thats ignorant - he wont know them or understand what they are talking about even if it is personal.

I have concidered that, just so I could go up to them and say something in Welsh...however a) I'm rubbish at languages and b) I don't have the time....

we all should try and speak a little Welsh from time to time, but we shouldn't ram it down peoples throats all the time, but it is fun when you go to a shop and they do start talking Welsh when you've ordered something in English, then you start talking Welsh to them, makes them cringe if they've said something rude about you......

That is fun my mother speaks welsh relitively well and the teachers once slagged me off saying i was lazy thick and didn't want to learn ( when it was dyslexia all the time ) in front of her in welsh thinking she couldn't understand them


very embarassing few them when she called them a ignorant bunch of inbreds in best welsh



I only speak a little welsh as i have enough difficulty with english ( before howell says it thought i'd better had)

Can totally empathise with you jinxred, I was told I was lazy and thick throughout my school life although I suffer from Dyslexia!

I have been living in Wales for 3 years now and the only Welsh i have picked up is
" Who's coat is that jacket, hanging up on the floor by ere?"

go to north wales and you'll find even the most ardent welsh nationalists all seem to be able to write 'bed & breakfast' in english...

i grew up in north wales and had the welsh language stuffed down my throat throughout my entire schooling. what a complete and utter scandalous waste of time & money
