Cam belt snapped

I have a 156 1.9 JTD M-Jet on a 54 plate. I was driving at 30mph when all went dead and the car stopped, a mechanic i know said the cam belt had snapped and it would cost around £1500+vat to fix, is this right ?

If this is the case then I will have to sell the car as a non runner if anyone is interested. I live just outside Prestatyn.

We charge £850 to repair this, usually a very straight forward repair
