Dear Alfa friends,

I've been reading the Alfa Owner's forum for a while now with great interest in the Brera. After testdriving a Brera 2.4 Modifica early in the year I decided go for it and buy a Brera 2.4JTDM. At the end of April this year I finally took delivery of my '10 Brera 2.4JTDM. :)

The car is beautiful but i was left feeling a little disappointed with the performance of my standard Brera engine. Even after running it in it still seemed as if the engine was held back despite it running fine. After a bit of investigation I decided to buy a 'performance box' and settled on the Spider performance box after reading a review on this forum. It's "plug 'n play" and does indeed improve the engine. It makes the engine run smoother, gives you more power and improves the fuel-economy.

Having followed and read through the entire 'F1 Brera progress thread' for some time I became very interested in a proper remap as I've always had this done to my motorbikes with great results. After reading the excellent reports of people that had their remap done by Gus(AlfaTuner) and Adie(AHM) I decided to contact Adie and get a bit more info. Adie kindly answered all my e-mails and questions. Due to the travel-distance he suggested I
should get in touch with Gus. After a telephonecall to Gus and a nice chat I decided to book my Brera in for a 'dpf-removal remap' as Gus advised me this would suit me and my drivingstyle the most.

He was not wrong - He's given me a new car! - or rather a new engine... :wow:

The engine runs soooooo smooth it's unbelievable. This is engine tuning at a whole new level! The engine now pulls from 'idling' all the way up to the redline at an ever increasing rate without any hesitation. Ignoring numbers - the torque & power are exellent and way(!) beyond the Brera setups I've driven. It's stunning the way the diesel engine now revs without any hesitation, pulls hard and never runs out of puff. :D

I suppose it's like many things in life - it's all about the subtle differences that makes the really great things stand out. What amazes me the most is the silky smoothness and drivabillity of the whole car after the remap. You don't get a big 'lump' of power that chucks you back into the seat with lots of wheelspin and torquesteer. It's all very progressive and you can feel yourself being pushed progressively harder into your seat. The car doesn't wheelspin and torquesteer if you don't want it. To top it all off my fuel economy has gone from a confirmed 37-39mpg to 43-45mpg! I drive about 500miles per week in my Brera so it's important to me it drives nice and the improved fuel economy is a big plus.

If you're thinking of a remap do yourselves a favour and give Gus(AlfaTuner) or Adie(AHM) a ring for a chat.

I am one very happy diesel Brera driver! :D

Happy driving,

Clogz.

PS: If anyone is interested in a 2-3month old 'Spider performance box' for a Brera/159 2.4JTDM(210) PM me for details.

Great review Glogz!
Yes the way the power is delivered is the secret to this map, and shows how much time and development went into it.
Everyone who's driven a 2.4 with this work done has been very very impressed with the hole package of improved driveability and better fuel economy as well.
I'm pleased to read you are very satisfied with the results, and welcome to the F1 club!:cool:

Brill review Clogz, I've been kicking this backwards and forwards myself for ages, I would definitely go for it but I keep getting cold feet about the waranty. I believe the re-map is very hard to detect but the Dpf removal is a bit harder to cover up:confused:. How long did Gus have the car for?

Hi all.

Thanks for the positive comments. As James(F1JBS) mentioned the secret to this remap is the smoothness. Smoothness is your friend! Smoothness saves cluthes, engine parts, gearboxes and tyres. Gus was at explaining to me how much time was spend on perfecting this map. Time is expensive but will ultimately give you something great. The remap isn't the cheapest one but, believe me, was worth every penny. It's not a lot of fun commuting 3 hours a day in a car that annoys me because something isn't perfect. Some people can live with that but not me.:)

@xm3doug: yes, apparently it will be difficult to detect the changes to the ECU software but the missing Dpf will be noticed when the car is up on a ramp. Gus also offers a remap with removal of the dpf which will step be a big step forward. Gus explained to me that the most noticable difference is at the bottom-end of the torque envelope as they can't inject the optimal amount of fuel due to the dpf but I've never driven a Brera with that remap so I can't really comment. All I know is that I think I'd have been left wondering. I made an appointment with Gus and waited for them to do the work. It takes about four hours in total.

Now that I'm happy with the engine i can't seem to stop my mind from wondering how to stop the excessive body roll and get the 18inch wheels to fit the wheel arches better....

I'm with you on that, I was thinking of 10mm spacers all round, everyone says I should go up to 19" rims before changing the suspension, apparently it makes a big difference to the handling.

I thought when you said you have the "dpf-removal remap" it involved removing the dpf filter but it sounds like the remap somehow ignors the dpf electronically:confused:

Mmhhh...yes, I'm still undecided about the suspension. Some lightweight 19inch alloys are certainly temping to start with... :)

Sorry for the confusion about the remap. On my remap they have physically removed the dpf and replaced it with a straight through pipe and this remap also dissables the dpf software.

Gus and Adi also offer a different remap that keeps the dpf. This needs to be different as the dpf doesn't allow for the same fuel maps.... If I understood Gus properly... :)

Hi mick8165,

Yes,I read the thread about your dpf removal. It was a big step towards convincing me to go for the same. Thanks for the great feedback you posted and great to hear the car is is getting better and better!

Hi, I had a remap carried out at Red Dot Racing on my 08 159 Ti, DPF removed, EGR delete at 25,000 miles.

Not one problem in 30,000 Miles!!! with very smooth power delivery!

Augusto is a great guy, Italian and passionate about Alfas!

Was in good shape standard, 334 Ft Lbs Torque but down on stated power of 210 BHP at 193 BHP ? but I think this is the norm?

Paid ÂŁ400 and ended up with 442 Ft Lbs of Torque!! and 245 BHP!!!!

Car is a proper weapon now! and has in fact got faster as engine has loosened up!

Averages 40 MPG!

Also had my sons 130 BHP 6 speed Seat Ibiza remapped and ended up with 180 BHP! for only ÂŁ200!
