You are right of course, is something I thought about doing in my 3.0 V6, which does 3,000rpm in 6th at 70mph!
But, having looked at the possible fuel savings (2-4mpg maybe?), compared to the cost of doing the swap, it would take years to even break even!
But, I can see the reason behind fitting the closer ratio 6-speed box. That would be a good performance mod, a longer 5th gear is just money saving in the long-run, compared to a big outlay now. It would be easier to put on bigger tyres next time they needed replacing..
