147 brake upgrade review

Hi,

Last weekend I replaced some bits on the brakes of my 147, since there have been a few threads about brakes recently I thought I'd waffle about what I've done and how they feel, hopefully it'll prove useful to someone.

I already used EBC grooved & dimpled front discs, in conjunction with EBC Red Stuff pads all round, and standard discs on the back. Having done three trackdays now with this set up, I found them plenty strong enough, but they always started to fade a tad towards the end of the day, I don't know if this was down to the car crying enough or me asking a bit too much from the brakes in the last session, but I wanted to try & sort it.

I've replaced the hoses with Goodridge braided ones, the front pads with EBC Yellow Stuff, and replaced the fluid with ATE Super Blue racing fluid.

Holy crapola I'll reserve final judgement until they've done a track day but on the road they're so much stronger, there really is a vast difference. I'm dead chuffed I was a bit concerned that the Yellow Stuff pads wouldn't work well from cold, but they don't seem to need any warming up at all.

So considering I wanted to improve the brakes without spending a huge amount (don't want to get into new calipers or anything like that) it seems to have been a complete success. Recommended

Just going off my own experience so far I'd say the Yellow, but bear in mind I've not tried them on track yet.

They are not as good

Lot of the ring regulars rate Pagids Yellow or Orange, Ferodo DS 2500 or 3000 also have a lot of fans. EBC tends to get binned after the first outing.

I've got EBC Yellowstuff on my car at the moment, and I will be replacing it with Ferodo before my next ring trip.

Re: 147 brake upgrade review

Time for an update on this........ I felt a bit of a thunk from my brakes yesterday as I was about to get home (luckily), so to put my mind at rest I had to have a quick inspection. I have to say:

DON'T USE EBC YELLOWSTUFF

After careful bedding in, close to 1000 road miles, a trackday at Bedford, and another 3,000 miles on the road, the material on each pad was down to an average of 5mm. But the really scary thing was this:

Feck knows where the rest of the pad has gone

I've rattled an irate email off to EBC, but to be honest as they're a pad intended to be used on the track I'm not expecting any comeback. Needless to say I didn't expect them to do this halfway through their life, and I'm glad I had a set of DS2500 pads ready to go in. Should've listened the all the warnings about the yellow pads shouldn't I?

Re: 147 brake upgrade review

Marko, I'd already decided to try the DS2500's so luckily I had a set in the garage ready to go in, only done 70-odd miles on them so far but they feel so much better already...

no response from EBC yet.

Re: 147 brake upgrade review

Feck me - at least mine didn't do that

Just got back from giving the DS 3000 a serious test, and my impressions will be summarised in a separate thread, but they are a great pad
