Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

@TB; what NM figures are you getting out of your bella now???

I am around the 400NM mark, out of my 8v diesel.

BTW: either I am imagining or dreaming, but I think that the Q2 is getting better after a few hundred KMs.

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

I'm sure you are right about the Q2 diff improving, I read on the Torsen site that they sake time to break in and for the torque bias ratio to stabilize

Have never had it dynoed kgb, the way I have it setup its got probably 50Nm in reserve so would be certainly below 500Nm.

Yes: go for RedLine. They have an 250W equivalent gearbox oil ! Using that will prevent a lot of issues Not cheap, but the same oil as used by for example the Rally renault Clio's (who have a heat problem due to the compact build of the engine + gearbox)

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

I don't think i can bear trudging through all the posts on this topic, so can someone tell me if it was established whether or not the q2 could be retro fitted to the petrol t-sparks? If not, is there a good alternative?

Not possible with the 5 gear box. There are however LSD diffs for 5gearbox (more expensive though).

Cheers LH!

So this stuff works well with the type of Diff as the Madeno/Q2 ? Some of the other types seems to refer to cluth type LSD's

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

Welcom !

This stuff works well with both: The Clio Rally cars use a Sadev seq. gearbox (with plate LSD). The only oil that keeps them alive. In the Q2 (in my ex fiat 156) it worked well too (and in previous cars with Quaife too). Given the specific composition, it works as if 250W, but without the thickness: ie bad lubrification at low temperatures (of the oils) => possible damage to the gearbox.
Will be the oil in the diff my (driftdays) Beemer with Quaife LSD too as of next week.

I would recommend (anyhow) to be easy on any car with high performance oils (both engine and diff) when the oils are not yet on working temperature

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

Yes i was thinking about the fact that my wife drives the blue car, and gladly uses full lock when cold...She knows not to rev the car untill after 5 mins of driving, and especilly during the cold season, but if she also has to drive with minimal lock for some time i think she might get fed up with it all

So if i understand this correct, then this stuff works well under high temps (ie does not become too thin) but is not overly thick when cold? It's not like the 6 speed gerbox is among the smoothest one out there, so i'd prefer not to add to that problem.

Yes, that is the purpose of this oil. (personally I think the 6 gearbox is the best gearbox Alfa has ever made; not quite as good as a BMW 6 gearbox, but pretty good anyhow!). Robert has it in my "ex" I think he can attest to it.
Gear change is getting at normal level after about 2 miles, before that a little bit heavier but not like a ZF gearbox from the Alfa Sei or the first series Maserati bi-turbo

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

Thanks, I will track down a supplier for this.

I suspect my Q2 diff and gearbox are going to need all the help they can get

Cheers,
TB

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

I think full lock is fine, just don't give it loads of welly with full lock.

IMHO many of the low speed failures are just the incremental result of previous stresses.

In any case your blue car has a torsen diff so I think it should be fine unless your wife robs banks for a living

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

One person in the German GTA forum has compiled a lot of info related to Q2 diff in one document. It may be of interest to somebody:

http://kc.linea7.com/files/users/squ...2alfa6gang.pdf

On page 3 it lists the parts and part numbers which are needed when replacing the original diff with the Q2. The whole document is in german but at least the part listing is understandable to english language readers. Maybe someone with better understanding with german language can translate the instructions.

Re: Retrofitting a Q2 to an existing Alfa

My german is not very good, but the Q2 diff. fits to the 5 gear-box on the JTDs as well without a problem...as you can see from my pictures that you used in the manual

also there is another pictures that I think is from a friend of mine that has fitted the Q2 to his 164 2.0 V6 Turbo.

On the diesel you can go by just replacing the differential itself, no need of rings and other stuff.

Yesterday we finish fitting the Q2 to a GT 3.2

No problem...I am happy that my pictures ended up in such a nice guide like yours.

You can add the 5 speed gearbox and the 164 2.0 V6 Turbo...if it is not already there...
