It does help if you read it all through, quite a lot of information I know.

But, there has been lots of threading on HID's and having spent time looking at the DoT guidlines, talking to my Alfa specialist about doing a conversion with MOT rules, proper setup etc. I thought I would produce a step-by-step article (with pics) to help others make a decision. E-mark on the headlamp unit itself is one of the main critereon, so as I did, you'll have to get new units as part of the transformation.

I was coming back from Suffolk to Kent last night and now I can actually see the road clearly, rather than guessing where the NS is

Now, rules is rules, so it's interesting that the DFT's article is a statement of their interpretation of current law, not drafting/proposing new legislation. I guess the key point is the requirement for auto-leveling and washer devices.

However, I've just looked at the 2012 MOT inspection manual which require that these functions operate where fitted, not that they are fitted in the first place. Rejection only if "a headlamp levelling or cleaning device is inoperative". If beam spread and everything else is ok, there doesn't seem a reason to fail a car with aftermarket HIDs.

So, aftermarket HID kits are illegal, but you won't fail your MOT. Seems a little inconsistent, right?

I'm sure this has been discussed at length here somewhere, but just my ha'pennies worth!

I think that's what they call a "Grey One".

From a personal point of view, if your HID passes its MOT, then why should it be illegal? Total contradiction and just adds to what has been a subject of confusion and further subjective comments.

I'd agree that anyone running say 8,000K to 10,000K HIDs should have their A-r-s-e handed to them, as they are far too bright and blatently illegal. The 4,000K kits are actually LESS bright than a car with factory Xenons, but provide you with a better beam pattern and clearer view of the road without P***ing off on-coming traffic.
