Remapped and Well Chuffed

So a while ago i started a thread " I want rip up my front tyre quicker than the last lot".. asking for advice regards remap or rechip.
I went with the remap and i astounded by the results.
156 (2001) 2.4JTD
196 BHP
2 seconds off the 0-60 (still practising)
Grunt in 4th and 5th scares the living crap out of me.
Improved economy on motorway cruisin already.
I have seen a few comments by other members about the pros and cons. I am yet to see a con except the 345 quid to do the job... money well spent to be honest but i am tight hence the JTD lol
If anyone wants the details of who did the job pm me and i will pass on the email address etc

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Angel tuning is an AO member, used to post quite regularly. No one has said much bad about them, so I would have thought they are OK.
Be carefull with all that torque, it can chew up your transmission if you use it too much.

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Congrats

I will remappp my bella within the next couple of weeks. With Digital Tuning-SA will get 148hp and 363NM...that is 1.9jtd 8v

We already remapped one Lancia K SW 2.4JTD 136hp to 170hp...The car is on a trip to Italy and will be back next monday in Bulgaria. So I will post how it goes...

The transmission will hold but the clutch will last 30 to 40 000km if you continue to practise your 0-60mph.

What engine is yours (136,149,150hp) is how did the remappp...TELLL US PLEASE

I just made a wild guess, since Angeltuning is located in your corner of the world. A former member here was very well impressed with what they did to his 2.4 JTD.

Cheers

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

No worries Hoygaard, i just got a little worried for a moment lol.
My 2.4JTD was originally a German import with 146BHP and was a great drive before i had the remap now its just alot better through the range of gears, its smoother from take off and in heavy traffic, with the benefit of the extra torque i manage to pee off all those BMW 330 TD and 320 TD sheep when the roads clear... on a recent trip to London i counted 5 red faced sheep ha ha... I have heard some people whinge that the car cannot take over 180 BHP but so far so good.. I counted on changing the clutch within another 30-40 K anyway but i doubt i will still have the car then... I am smitten with new GT and will wait till there are some second hand etc.
PS does anyone know of a good Alfa specialist (not dealer) North West UK???

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Cheers 8MU but they all a bit of a drive from me.. I have 2 Alfa dealers within 40 miles of me but i wudnt trust them to service my car (never know how they wud react to remap) so need Alfa Specialist near or around Liverpool/Manchester/Preston triangle.

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Mangoletsi in Knutsford are *the* Alfa dealers, however if you do a search through recent posts, there is mention of an independent in Lytham or Lytham St Annes.

Anyway - I thought the remaps were meant to be undetectable (unless driving of course!)

What does your car *sound* like? an old Audi Quattro noise? What is it like on startup in the morning?

Just curious.

Martin

It's not the clutch, but the gearbox which you need to worry about.
Maybe I am being a cautious whinger, but my car is still under warranty and much as I would like the extra oooomph, I wouldn't be happy putting 300lb ft of torque through a gearbox with a max design load of about 250....

Oh, and the brakes can't cope as standard, so I would need to sort those as well!

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Mangoletsi - I was more comparing to Caledonia who look you in the eye whilst lying to you and don't take much care with your car. They are not conscientous.

Is the dark side beckoning Martin?

Sort of toying with the idea in my mind. I'm looking for another job,(a competitor who we refer to as the Dark Side as well) however that will mean lots more miles, and I want to change my V6 before the 120,000 mile service as that will be expensive again, all the brakes will need doing again, at the current rate I will need 4 new tyres also. And it will be 6 years old by then.

The calculation I've been doing in my head is that for what it would cost me extra to purchase a 2.4 M-Jet and remap it, plus spend on diesel for 30,000 miles per year, is the same as what I would pay for a cheaper 166 V6 and double the quantity of petrol. I don't think I would buy a brand new car again.

It's the heart vs. head argument and seeing as though I already have a V6, I must have a heart!

Martin

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

I don't think I would bother remapping a 20 valve JTD.
If you are doing that kind of mileage, I would want no quibbles on my warranty!!!
(head)
And it has 295lb ft of torque already.
Which is nice.
(heart)

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Mine was one week out of warrenty when i had it remapped so i wasnt that bothered in that respect. I understand that when the main dealers check for error codes they can also check for the software version of the ECU if there is any irregularity or there is a dopey technician on hand the software can be over written as a remap company would do. A relative within Alfa has confirmed this possible (just not that likely) he has also test driven my car beyond the point i would dare and he reckons its about as good as any he has driven recently, he is taking delivery of the GT (JTD) soon so i will compare the two. I think comparing remapping to the dark side is a little melodramatic Rick, its a cheap, effective upgrade and afore mentioned Alfa relative sees no problem with the torque/gearbox/transmission as they are engineered far beyond what the specification states. The biggest problems I face are controlling myself in the car, my right foot has doubled in weight and i have extra muscles around my neck. I did not enter the decision lightly but the alternatives were either too expensive or did not yield the same bang per buck. I enjoy the extra power and my wife enjoys the extra economy (driven sensibly) that counts as a resounding sucess in my house!!!!!

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

Ps.
It starts fine in the morning.

It growls like an Alfa should maybe slightly better than pre remap i dont have the best hearing so its a little difficult, friends reckon its better its subjective i suppose.

Drives like a V6

All with 40+mpg

Re: Remapped and Well Chuffed

awww come on Rick JTDs arent the darkside... i wudnt run an alfa if it was a petrol i just cudnt contend with the expense (had a few when i was free and single) so instead of gettin another merc i bought an alfa. Thats gotta be a good thing surely. I am sure you have tried a diesel... i bet u found it nowhere near as bad as you hoped it would be!!!
Putting and alfa engine in an astra as will happen NOW THATS THE HORNED ONES OWN HANDY WORK!!!!!!
Give us oil burners a break we love our cars we love alfas we just dont want to pay to use them lol
And yes i will enjoy it and yes if any petrol heads want a demo then roll up next to me at the lights and behold the power of diesel!!!!!
