Hmmm Air Filter and Exhaust Upgrades for 147 2L TS

In addition to sorting the brakes on my 147 I've been trying to find out what would be the best air filter exhaust combo without making my 147 sound like a boy racer, but obviously extracting a bit more power out of the engine.

All the websites I've looked on are someone confusing to say the least.

Also I don't really want to pay the earth for them.

Is there any benefit in just getting an air filter upgrade?

Further questions will surely follow when I think of them. Cheers!

Re: Air Filter and Exhaust Upgrades for 147 2L TS

yes there is a benefit to just fitting induction system. the best one (so be it not the cheapest) IMO is the BMC CDA BMC CARBON DYNAMIC ARIBOX | AIR FILTERS | AIR FILTER | car - bike - high performance - racing but as i say its not the cheapest.

A simple rule for an induction kit is it must be enclosed and it must have a cold air feed (from outside car ideally, such as behind front grill). if this is not possible it is possible on the none selespeed 147s to install an open filter in to the area behind the passenger wing. this space is protected from the engine heat and has a cold supply to it via the side of the headlights.

bear in mind an open filter WILL be a lot louder than an enclosed one.

I can recommend on a budget the halfords carbon induction kit. its not AS good as the bmc but have tested it on the rolling road on several cars and have yet to see one not gain from it. its about £70.

as for exhausts. the only way you will get more power from the exhaust system on the 2.0TS is to remove the pre-cats and silencers. this will make it quite loud! just fitting a back box whilst will look and sound decent will not be of benefit performance wise.

the pre cats are installed in the exhaust manifold so cant be replaced by pipes however the older 156 (mk1?) used the same 2.0TS engine but did not have the precats. therfore this manifold is a direct replacement if you can find one. this would give you a reasonable gain. after this its how loud are you willing to go? i had on my 2.0TS straight thru exhaust (with pre cats left in) and a small back box and it wasnt that loud but ive had very loud cars in the past.

something like

NOVITEC ONLINE SHOP 2007

would do the job

Re: Air Filter and Exhaust Upgrades for 147 2L TS

As posted on another thread.

Just got back from getting Red Dot 6 groove discs and fast road pad fitted on my 147.
I have to say even though the pads probably have another 100 miles until they're bedded in properly, the difference is startling!

It's like someone chucks an anchor out the boot every time I touch the brake peddle!

Very impreessed so far I have to say.
It's even got to the point where I'm thinking of stiffening the suspension to stop the car pitching so much when I brake!

My next visit back there I'll be armed with 400 quid for a carbon air filter thingy (technical term that) and an ECU re-map!

Once you start, you can't stop tinkering...

You're right about the suspension mods. Once I upgraded my brakes, I was itching to fit in stiffer suspension to control the nose diving on hard braking. I've recently put in coilovers and they've made a huge difference in how the car handles.

I know what you mean!!!!

I'm already working out how to fund my next mods!

Think I'll add coilovers to the list as well!

When you are the next time at Red Dot ask them what from their experience on the rolling road would make the best induction.

They do their own Carbon (CDA type) air filter kit. I believe it's a bit cheaper than they CDA one but one of the guys there reckon it's just as good, if not better than the CDA one (well he would say that wouldn't he????

It's worth a 4-5bhp increase apparently.
