Well Happy GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

So i just changed the intake pipe on my TS as per what was suggested on AO.
i ordered the GTA intake and it is a whole lot smoother and the mouth is wider than the v6 pipe cost me $75 nzd (about 25pounds)
it took me about 1hr to complete.. the hardest part was getting the old resonator of the airbox, i actually managed to crack the the pipe inlet on the airbox in doing so but the new intake pipe fitted so snug i had no worries about the seal.
the resonator is huge and i'm glad to get rid of it probably weights about 4 kg, knowing that a short smooth pipe is in there instead is peace of mind.
i had to zip tie on the pipe to the chasis as there was no connection point to screw on the pipe.

ANYWAY.. as soon as i started up i noticed a sound difference.. slightly deeper idle note from the intake.
Incar the noise only increased slightly but def a noticable difference with reaction on the accel pedal.. especially in 3rd <3000rpm and generally through the gears with reaction <3000 being slightly quicker and more responsive at all rpm.
my girl borrowed the car today and she did a drive by a couple of times hard on acceleration (she loves my alfa) and i noticed a Major difference with increase induction/engine note and noise.. it made me smile!!

SO: GTA INTAKE PIPE UPGRADE FOR TWINNIES
Quicker / better throttle response <3000 +
INCAR induction note- slight increase
OUTSIDE CAR induction note -Major increase
BETTER cold start response

Basically a cheap, fun & easy way to make your alfa a bit better!

Re: GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

I fitted on to my TS 156. It did seem to make the engine more responsive at higher RPM, but it didn't seem to make any noise diference.
Have you got the standard paper filter, or a high flow K&N type etc?

It has to be a good value mod though, and it lets the engine take in colder air without the hassle of road dirt/water getting into the intake, which you get from bumper mounted cold air feeds.

Re: GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

I thought the noise diff was minimal from inside and i must say i thought it would be louder but when my partner did a hard accel driveby i was well impressed and surprised it was louder... well more so kind of gruntier noise then full loudness.

i have standard filter but i took out the cone in the filter centre.

and it just feels so good to be able to do these small things to your car yourself.

Did you find the car better with or without the cone? Most people agree it is better with the cone in unless major tuning work is done to the rest of the engine.

Re: GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

So just to confirm:

The pipe directly replaces a twinspark item.

Could you get a few pictures up please

Now I had looked for the resonator in the intension of removing it but couldn't find it - I hadn't thought to look inside the airbox itself.

So you simply remove the angled pipe connecting the airflow meter and the airbox, open the airbox and then just remove whats inside? is that correct?

Re: GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

This thread should help.

Alfa Romeo forum: Gta intake mod

Sorry about the link to the other forum..

The cone is removed by removing the top hose as it goes down into the filter housing. The cone then simply lifts out.

Hmmm I can clearly see the advantage straight away, but it does look abit more work than I first though.

Seeing that it might push me down the aftermarket route.

You can change the pipe without removing the bumper. All you need to do is remove the undertray, sperate the resonator box from the air box and then manouvre it downwards out of the gap. You can then attach the GTA intake and secure it with a large cable tie at the top. This does work as it's what I did to mine.

Or you could buy the rest of the kit for a couple of quid and fix it properly

£0.38.....12624101 flat washer
£1.08.....7663916 retaining block

I would have thought that the 147 was a similar setup, but I am not 100% sure as I haven't looked under one.

I've done this mod on my JTS, also put a K&N in. sounds better with this combination (you can actually hear it now) but no real gains. maybe works better on the TS?

Well i would describe it as different. it's def a bit louder and it has smoothed out the magic 3000 without such a big surge and it also has a nice little hiss in between gears around 4000rpm.
i did an ecu reset so maybe this was part of it.
not a huge noticeable difference in performance power vs torque etc but sounds great and combined with the gta intake i think sounds killer.

Do you think a direct replacement filter K&N or sort would give a little more grunty noise /performance increase?

I wouldn't use a K&N as they tend to kill the MAF, Personally I would rather loose a couple of BHP and use the standard paper one.

Re: GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

Good info guys, for my self.. I installed KingDragon Air Filter with standard box. So far the performance great after I clean the Trotle body and MAF (DIY). Plan to try GTA intake as you all doing. Wish can get the GTA intake soon..

I think this is only because of the oil.. There's oil on a BMC CDA as well, its advised you either vacuum it first or remove the MAF before fitting it to the car, and let it idle for ten mins to pull through any excess. There shouldn't be excess, but its not worth the risk IMO.

Re: GTA intake Mod ON TS - MY VERDICT

over oiling will kill the MAF. i went for the K&N purely for the noise aspect. it now sounds more alfa than vauxhall

i am also wondering if a K&N or type direct replacement filter is better/will give even more noise than the paper filter... do you think it has changed the note for the better??
it also appeals so i don't have to pay for a new paper filter every service.

The K&N coupled with the GTA mod does make it sound better, a nice note from the exhaust under acceleration but nothing to loud. I would leave the cone in though, only when I put mine back in, I realised the difference it makes.

Again this is on a JTS unaware of the difference with the TS.
