Propane & Methanol Injection

hey found a site that deals with propane injection for diesels, and methanol injection for petrol cars, both n/a and turbocharged, and seems a reasonably good idea for tuning.

take a look,

www.advancedfueltechnologies.co.uk - Home

the guy there is running one of his kits on a 156 at the moment, turbo applications could gain 25% with remap.

im not affiliated in any way, just thought there might be some interest.

Re: Propane & Methanol Injection

I looked at this before.. Even had an email conversation at length with a supplier of LPG injection kits for diesels. None of them managed to set it up in such a way that you could either use or not use LPG.. If you wanted to use it, you had to have it mapped specifically to lower the diesel fuelling. But that meant if you ran out of LPG your engine would run quite lean. Or you could just use lpg without a remap.. In which case it would be running very rich..

This is what put me off the idea.

Re: Propane & Methanol Injection

the link I gave..Australia, says the following
What if I can’t get LPG? Or I run out of gas?
Doesn’t matter. You don’t even need to switch the system off. You will notice a decrease in power as the LPG runs out. The system does not affect the diesel injection system, so it will continue to run on diesel as it did before the Diesel/Gas system was fitted, although with noticeably less power! When you do fill up the LPG again, the system will automatically begin injecting gas again.

If its not legal it will only be because the theiving government havent decided on whether they should charge 70 or 80% tax.

Re: Propane & Methanol Injection

Nitrous is street legal in the UK provided you notify your insurance company.. So I would imagine LPG and and methanol for diesels are as well.

Don't some buses run on propane?
(Thus it's legal.)

Difference is Nitrous isnt a fuel. I know several people (all in cornwall) that run Kerosene and other house heating fuels through diesels and its not legal. Unless the fuel has had road fuel tax applied to it its not legal on british roads, such as red diesel. LPG would be legal as it is already on sale as road fuel and therefore taxed (albeit not as much as petrol and diesel....yet) but i dont think you can buy Methanol for road use one racing use.

Methanol is not sold for road use, it is an alcohol !
Its poisonous, volatile, colourless, and smells sweeter than Ethanol...
Prolonged exposure can cause blindness, and insanity

Use with caution

Used to be used in truck air systems as an anti freeze, but was banned...

It is also used for producing biodiesel via transesterification reaction.

Also, unless you want a seized motor, make sure your oil is methanol friendly (used to be castor oils only, but modern synths available now)

I have a number of books on nitrous, turbos, superchargers, methanol and the like.. also been involved in rebuilding speedway engines

Also its vapour being slightly heavier than air will stay close to the ground waiting for a small spark to set it ablaze. Its flames then are practically invisible; one may walk right into them and not notice it until his clothes are suddenly on fire.

Methanol mixed with N2O is used as fuel in model car racing and similar accidents have happened many times during refueling.

We bunged a 5 litre can into a bedford rascal with a full tank of fuel once. It felt a bit perkier for a while....
