New backbox for 147JTD 8v

Today, in the garage of the "BataSportAuspuff" Company, their crew realized an new backbox with the oval endpipe. The pictures below show new and old backbox. Sound is tiny louder than before and performance gain...only after the dyno...
Cheers Dusan.

I wouldn’t expect any measurable gains, but enjoy the sound and a box that is not rusty after one winter :-)

Thanks gotcha... I have more black smoke from exhaust than before, but I think that is normal for system without any catalyst and with remap.
Cheers. Dusan.

Oh, you have a re-map and de-cat as well? Than it might me a good idea to dyno it and see the results. I thought you are expecting power increase thanks to backbox change only
More black smoke can be expected after your mods as well
Cheers

Re: New backbox for 147JTD 8v

Hello kgb,
Thanks for your consideration... It is simple and lightly skewed pipe ("/" shape, Ø50mm) trough the muffler (≈30cm length) between input pipe and oval endpipe. Also, the muffler includes the mid-chamber for noise damping purpose...

I expect more gain after fitting a BMC-CDA induction kit (as you explain in many posts). Where, in that case, should be the location of COLD air intake pipe for 147 JTD?
My second question is related to the Celtictuning 147JTD remap: is it 165BHP and almost 400Nm real and safe for 147JTD 8v?
Cheers. Dusan.

Re: New backbox for 147JTD 8v

CelticTuning remap for our car is among the best, can't say the best as I have not tried all companies...BUT

In track days Celtictunig map is way faster then the rest and the map is also safer for your car.

If you compare the Digitaltuning map (150+bhp-360NM) that I had for a very long time with the one from celtictuning (170+Bhp-400NM on my car)...celtic remap is safer even that it produces more power...here is the trick between a very good tuner and good tuner. Both maps are completely safe for your car.

Celtic remap is also cheaper around 300pounds compared to 550Euro DigitalTuning one.

DigitalTuning did produce a second remap for my car, but it was not safe enough for my bella...and was still a lot slower on the track.

Re: New backbox for 147JTD 8v

Thanks for the information, kgb.
First, here in Serbia, in my opinion, we have only remap solutions with the modest gain (max. approx. 138BHP and 330Nm). According to interest of Serbian Alfa owners we are the small but nice market for the tuning companies. Unfortunately we have no representatives of Celtictuning, Angeltuning, Squadratuning, Digitaltuning, RedDottuning, BlackAngelTuning, etc. Also we have not qualified consulting company in this area and we must learn in forums like this, from enthusiasts.
Second, can you explain me (it will be nice by drawing or picture) what is the proper fitting of BMC-CDA in 147JTD with standard intercooler?
Thanks in advance and best regards. Dusan.

Re: New backbox for 147JTD 8v

If you decide to keep the original intercooler you have to go for the smaller BMC-CDA...NOT the big one (which I have on my Bella).

You can locate it in the same area, where you now have the factory air filter box. Basically you need the 90 degree pipe, so that the turbo inlet pipe will face the front of the car...and there you mount the BMC-CDA which has to take its air next to the radiator. You have to drill some whole in the plastic around the radiator.

ps: 138bhp and 330NM is "nothing" for this car.

Re: New backbox for 147JTD 8v

Hello Petko,
Thanks for the effort that you explain me some important details.
After your recommendation I will try to apply the BMC-CDA in my Alfa, especially because I was seeing on kgb.alfaromeo-bg.com/147tuning/stage10 three pictures with details for fitting of BMC-CDA. Almost everything is clear now...
Now, I have only small questions:
If I will keep the original intercooler, may I use:
a) the CDA85-150 (large type with better free-flow of the air and D1=85mm, D2=150mm, L1=200mm) or
b) the CDASP-08 - is it in your car? (medium type with good free-flow and with D1=70mm, D2=150mm, L1=160mm) or
b) the CDA70-130 (small type with fair free-flow and with D1=70mm, D2=130mm, L1=185mm).
Is it problem with the placement of the CDA85-150 in the proper position because of his dimensions or the reason for eventual problem is overmuch air intake for original intercooler?
My friend (with the experience in tuning) tell me that he may provide one larger intercooler (made in China) as replacement of the original IC. Is it allowable according to origin of this (for tuning purpose) vital part.

I know that my actual remap is with the modest power and torque gain and I hope that you help me in better solution. Thanks in advance.

Best regards from Dušan.
