Turbo Fitting

I have a normal 2.0 gtv and was wondering if you can fit a turbo? If so how much?

I dont want to buy a turbo version as i love mine too much but want a bit more out of it.... any ideas?

Cheers

Re: Turbo Fitting

Can't really be sure but I think it would be difficult. Wanted to put A/C in mine but was told that it can't be done and this would seem easier than fitting a Turbo.

Be interesting to see if anyone really knows.

Re: Turbo Fitting

Well, you'd need a new exhaust manifold to power the turbo.. Probably need a whole new exhaust infact, larger diameter for better flow. Then you would need to lower the compression ratio in the engine by changing the pistons, otherwise the compression ratio would be too high and the fuel would pre-detonate. Then you would need to bin the ECU and get an aftermarket mappable ECU hooked up, so the thing would run.

Then you need to start thinking about cooling. Your engine oil will also now be cooling/lubricating the turbo, will the standard heat exhanger and radiator be efficient enough? You might need to mount an oil cooler somewhere. And you'll want an intercooler as well to keep inlet manifold temperatures down.

Now, you might find you start running lean, so you'll have to think about bigger injectors, and then possibly a bigger fuel pump.

Are you much of a home mechanic? Could you do these sort of jobs yourself?

It is a very big job.. Would the clutch and gearbox handle the torque as well?

EDIT: I think Autodelta do a turbo conversion for about £5k..

Re: Turbo Fitting

Try Practical Performance Car magazine, it's the magazine for people who wake up in the morning wanting to drop a turbo into something ... pretty much anything is doable (PPC have put a tank engine in a Rover).
