Tuning a 1.6?
Hi, just a quick one. Is there anything able to be done to a 156 T-Spark 1.6 16v that improves its performance or am i asking for trouble? i.e snapping cam belt, blowing up engine etc....

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
MPH had his 1.6 147 remapped (same engine as yours) with excellent results.
Get yourself a club membership and go get your discount from the RD boys.

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
If your really serious about performance you could probably get a 2.0 dropped in its place for about a grand. With the fast ratio 1.6 gearbox it'd be a stormer
But if you aren't serious about spending that sort of money, then a remap with Red Dot is what I'd suggest.

Annoying thing with red dot for me is they are miles away. Be a whole day trip rather than half a day....

Where abouts are you based? Angel and celtic tuning also get good reviews on here.

That is a problem. You'd have an ace drive home though.

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
Im based in Poole, Dorset. Theres an alfa dealer and specialist but they are both complete rip offs. And i dont think the specialist do remapping anyway....and they arent the most friendly lot also, you normaly get a "why do you want to tune up the engine? why not just buy a bigger engine?" well no sh*t but the insurance with my age is high enough thanks.
But yeah all i can say is in my area all you can do is do wheels, exhausts, body kit, resprays or colour change (colour change will cost 2 grand ) and the basics. I would like a specialist thats knows the engine well that is keen on giving the customer the max performance out of it and a bigger smile when the driver is in his car.
So yeah... Poole, Dorset... whats the closest do you reckon?

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
You can get Angel tuning to come to you. If I were you though, I'd drive to Watford.

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
You seriously are better off getting a bigger engine though it has to be said. I'v got a 1.6 too due to insurance (Cheers... thanks a lot!)
You could go nuts on a 1.6 and not get far over the stock 2.0ltr figure.
If you've got £3K spare you could turbo it! But that is the ultimate in pointlessness.

Red Dot.
Alternatively, sell the 1.6 and get the 2.0 (sounds better, smoother with balancer shaft and more power though less mpg and also more things to go wrong).

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
You could change the crank and make into a 1.8, personally a prefer the 1.8 to the 2.0, just a bit more revy, is that a word? (revy) I am sure you know what I mean

Got to say, I've heard a lot of favourable comparisons between the 1.8 and the 2.0..

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
Yeah, getting another car was on the cards, i got some money saved and i can sell the car to add. Also a 21st b-day on the way im sure will help too Hmm will just have to see how the insurance goes. Works out better if im a named driver as i have a 10 years+ no claims bonus to steal off. Fingers crossed.

Are you sure this can be done? What else needs to be changed? Con rods are the same?
I was seriously thinking about this idea, I made a post here on AO year or two ago, but nobody was able to really confirm it was doable.

Re: Tuning a 1.6?
Steve,
I've been thorugh the tuning motions with my 1.6 156. The one thing I didn't do was remap it - not entirely sure why I didn't, but as everyone says, a re-map is definitely the best option for any noticeable powergains.
As far as exhausts go, unless you spend hundreds on a FULL system you're not going to notice much of a difference unfortunately. Suffice to say it'd probably need a re-map after fitting a full system anyway.
I changed the cat-back for a bigger 2.5" system, and the induction for a proper cold air fed and insulated box. on the rolling road, I gained a whopping 1.5 BHP!!! But it sounds absolutely fantastic...
